Unfortunately, the impact of Black History Month can often be fleeting. While it serves as a vital opportunity to spotlight significant figures, events, and contributions, the challenge lies in ensuring that this education reaches those who need it most. Engaging at-risk youth requires more than just programming during a specific month; it necessitates ongoing efforts, mentorship, and connections to cultural history that are relevant to their lives. This could involve community programs, workshops, storytelling sessions, or even integrating these themes into school curricula throughout the year. Additionally, we must consider how narratives are delivered. For young people entrenched in violence or hardship, seeing relatable figures who have overcome similar struggles can be empowering. Real-life stories of resilience from their own communities, combined with a broader understanding of their heritage, can ignite hope and inspire change. Ultimately, creating a culture where Black history is acknowledged every day—as part of a larger conversation about identity, belonging, and potential—can help ground young people and provide them with the tools they need to channel their energies positively. It is essential to create spaces where they feel seen, heard, and valued, and where they can learn the richness of their history alongside the skills necessary to navigate and thrive in today’s world. This comprehensive approach can help nurture their identities and guide them toward a path of constructive action rather than violence. A king teaches his son how to become a king, A queen teaches her daughter to become a queen. How can our children develop their potentials if we do not embarace it and lead by example. This is what Project Lifeline teaches, we educate on our god given strength to navigate our paths to align our youth with their inner cultural attributes. Being black is not just the colour of our skin, it is a way of life and most of all it is a spiritual connection to our ancestoral heritage. Remember family car trips when you were young? You and your brother/sister would sit in the back seat and, eventually, one would hit the other and a ruckus would ensue? Your Mom or Dad would growl something like "stop it back there, or you will BOTH be punished". No time was expended to find out what REALLY happend. Your parents just wanted quiet. As adults, we've all done something similar, but there's a name for this: lazy parenting. Taking the time to find out who INSTIGATED the conflict is WORK after all. We are witnessing the same phenomenon today in protests and demonstrations, where leaders are TERRIFIED of taking sides, lest they alienate those who oppose the wronged parties, who vote too. We saw this "bothsidesism" writ large in 2017, when Trump characterized a clash at a white supremist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia as having "very fine people...on BOTH sides". Standing up to hatred and bigotry, irrespective of political consequences takes PRINCIPLES and moral COURAGE, after all. Something, we are learning, that is apparently in short supply for US presidents of BOTH political stripes. Witness, Mayor Olivia Chow's ongoing cowardess and ambivalence toward the Jewish community amidst the hate rallies and "occupations" that have plagued our fair city of Toronto, since almost immediately after the attrocities of October 7rh. While snubbing an opportunity to lend some support to a Toronto Jewish Community under siege and unsafe in the wake of a wave of anti-semitism that has long passed the point of just lip-service, by not attending the flag raising ceremony yesterday at City Hall commemorating the Jewish State's 76th birthday, Mayor Chow's behavior was disappointing and shameful...but not surprising. Fear, ignorance and unbridled political ambition are a witch's brew that seems to de-magnetize many a moral compass. We need leaders who know right from wrong and are prepared to act accordingly... a rare commodity today, it seems. Until then, we need people with backbone and moral character to speak truth to power and call out the vacuum of real leadership whenever and wherever we find it.
