I got to attend the NZ Road Safety, Emergency Response and Healthcare Awards yesterday, organised by the National Road Trauma Centre. Seeing the various emergency services and other road safety personnel there, and hearing about the various road crash situations that people have encountered, put a very human touch on a topic that many often think won't affect us. In a related way, a few weeks ago, I finished reading the excellent book "Eliminating Serious Injury and Death from Road Transport: A Crisis of Complacency" by Australian road safety researchers Ian Johnston, Carlyn Muir, and Eric Howard. Although now 10 years since it was first published, the messages in it are still as relevant today in terms of how we in Australasia (and many other parts of the world) have half-heartedly tackled the road safety problem, and let politics and human nature overshadow best practice. In eleven insightful chapters, Johnston, Muir & Howard discuss a number of challenges in the road safety dialogue, including: ?- the myth that it's mostly "bad, reckless drivers" who cause most crashes, by citing examples of several ordinary people who ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time ?- the common focus by media and the public alike on road death numbers alone, ignoring the extensive impact of injury crashes to those victims and the people around them ?- the pervasive focus on "car culture" over many decades and the resulting emphasis often on self interest, efficiency and speed over safety ?- the difficulty in getting people to shift from a "blame/compliance" approach when addressing crashes to a Safe System approach instead ?- getting people to understand the effect of changing behaviours on a crash risk that seems very miniscule to each individual but adds up collectively across a whole population ?- the lack of committed coherent leadership at a government level to make the brave (but evidence-led) calls to introduce key safety measures It's a confronting (and arguably sometimes depressing) read about the current state of affairs, but it also provides some useful pointers on the way forward - now it's up to us to make the necessary changes... #RoadSafety #BeTheChange https://lnkd.in/g-qQcq3s
