WISPAU has responded to the 2024 Regional Telecommunications Independent Review. Fixed wireless internet service providers (WISP's) play a crucial role in enhancing connectivity in local Australia, particularly in regional and rural areas. WISP providers offer reliable high-speed internet access by transmitting data via radio signals from a base station to a fixed antenna on the customer’s premises. This technology is especially significant in Australia due to the vast and often challenging landscape, which can make traditional wired infrastructure expensive and difficult to deploy. WISPAU has submitted a response to the issues paper and looks forward to working with all organisations with a goal of a better connected Australia. For details on the response and to read the response in full to the questions put forward by the issues paper, see here - https://lnkd.in/gut5ueAK

Regional telecommunications policy in Australia is a menagerie of duplicative programs providing duplicative services - at a cost of more than $1 billion a year. And yet regional consumers are still lumped with outdated, heavily-subsidised technologies, even when metro-comparable services are available to 100% of premises! In my speech to the Communications Day (CommsDay) Summit, I presented the principles that should underpin a modern universal services framework - you can read my remarks here: https://lnkd.in/gQi-2gC2

How do we improve Australian Regional Telecommunication Services? Gary McLaren & Luke Coleman, both speak with true insight in to challenges & principles of change. “First, we have a mess of crossed-subsidies funding overlapping services in regional Australia. Second, we need to start with a clean sheet of paper and ask, what are the principles that should underpin a modern Universal Service framework? And finally, we need to a dedicated program to Close the Gap for First Nations Australians, by providing access to modern communications services in Australia’s most remote and underprivileged communities.” ~ Luke Coleman. #NBNCO #AustralianRegionalServices #AustralianFirstNation #Telecommunications #RailCommunications #IndigenousRegionalCommunity #Telstra #ConnectedCommunity

Germany is making significant uptake to its digital infrastructure by substantially increasing funding for fibre optic expansion. The government plans to boost its investment from €12 billion to €38 billion, following approval from the European Commission. This initiative aims to accelerate the deployment of high-speed internet across the country, particularly in areas currently underserved with speeds up to 300 Mbps. A number of regulatory steps cannot be removed but can be streamlined at the government levels. To further facilitate this rollout, the German government has introduced the TK Network Expansion Acceleration Act (TK-NABEG), which streamlines bureaucratic processes. As of the end of 2023, approximately 17.9 million homes in Germany had access to fibre, indicating significant progress. #Telecommunications #DigitalInfrastructure #FibreOptic #Germany #BroadbandExpansion

Governor Glenn Youngkin announced approval from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) for Virginia’s list of over 133,000 eligible locations that will receive high-speed internet access through the Commonwealth’s $1.48 billion Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) allocation to connect all Virginians to high-speed, affordable reliable internet. This approval supports Virginia’s efforts to close the digital divide and deploy internet networks to areas without broadband. “Virginia remains firmly committed to bridging the digital divide across the Commonwealth so all Virginians can thrive in our digital world,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “Coupling this historic investment with the state’s ongoing broadband efforts, we are confident that we will connect all Virginians that are currently unserved to high-speed, affordable internet, therefore solidifying Virginia’s place as the best state to live, work and raise a family.”
