Over 2 decades ago, sub-Saharan Africa experienced an epidemiological transition where Non-Communicable diseases (#NCDs) like #diabetes, #cancer, and cardiovascular diseases caused most deaths (24% in 2000 to 37% in 2019)-WHO. Yet, there is still a gap in #empowering NCD patients with knowledge and tools for collaborative disease management. Furthermore, contextualized evidence from local #research is not adequate for better management. And health systems are yet to improve to cater to this disease burden. Between 1 January and 22 September 2024, over 5.9M new malaria cases including 1,023 deaths were reported, far exceeding the total number of malaria cases in 2023 alone. Since 2018, the number of malaria cases reported on a yearly basis has been continuously increasing. The majority of malaria cases are reported from Oromia (50%), Amhara (17%), Southwest (9%), South Ethiopia (6%), and Benishangul Gumuz (5%). For children with severe #malaria in remote areas, every minute matters when it comes to receiving life-saving treatment. Administered by community health workers, rectal artesunate capsules (RAS) buy precious time, allowing children to be brought to healthcare facilities to receive further treatment. ? Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) constitute approximately 74% of global mortality, with 77% of these deaths occurring in low-income and middle- income countries. Tanzania exemplifies this situation, as the percentage of total disability-adjusted life years attributed to NCDs has doubled over the past 30 years, from 18% to 36%. To mitigate the escalating burden of severe NCDs, the Tanzanian government, in collaboration with local and international partners, seeks to extend the integrated package of essential interventions for severe NCDs (PEN-Plus) to district-level facilities, thereby improving accessibility. This study aims to estimate the cost of initiating PEN-Plus for rheumatic heart disease, sickle cell disease and type 1 diabetes at Kondoa district hospital in Tanzania. #healtheconomics #PENPlus #costinghealthcare #tdabc

The prevalence of smear positive TB varies by districts and is high in rural southern Ethiopia compared to the estimated national prevalence. More TB patients remain missed and unreached, impacting negatively on health outcomes. TB case finding approaches should be revisited and innovative approaches and tools to identify missing people with TB should be scaled up

To strengthen health systems, we start by collecting better data. Take this example about diabetes data in South Africa, where the health system was using numbers from Tanzania. This article is the first one included in a more comprehensive volume of #Covid19 research published by the Journal of the MULTIDISCIPLINARY DIGITAL PUBLISHING INSTITUTE —MDPI— last February. It deals with an in-depth analysis of the connection between disease severity and low lymphocyte levels related to age and ABO #Blood groups. In fact, it was conducted in a Ghanaian city from June 2020 to July 2021 on the basis of geographical and demographic differences among patients. Lest we forget, Africa has been the most unattended continent and therefore the least favored world region at the time of vaccine distribution. Hence I do believe it is worth reading all together in order to learn much more about any likely risk in association with not only CORONAVIRUS positivity and haematological profiles but also plasma ACE2 levels and #SARSCOV2 status. BURDEN OF MATERNAL MORTALITY IN AFRICA: Over the last three decades, the United Nations interagency working group series of model-based maternal mortality estimation showed a significant reduction in maternal mortality ratio (MMR) at global, regional, and national levels. However, the contribution of sub-Saharan Africa for the global maternal deaths in 2020 was nearly two-fold higher than before, and the top five countries with high burden of maternal deaths remained unchanged after four decades.
