Myth 3: ADHD Isn’t Overdiagnosed Truth: ADHD is often underdiagnosed, especially in girls and adults, because symptoms can vary widely. Myth 4: People with ADHD Cannot Focus on Anything Truth: People with ADHD can hyperfocus on interesting activities but struggle with routine or less engaging tasks. Myth 5: All People with ADHD Are Hyperactive Truth: ADHD has three types: inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. Not everyone with ADHD is hyperactive. What to do when suspicious of ADHD but school isn’t on board yet? Is ADHD being overdiagnosed? Why are girls so tricky to diagnose? How can a child be a part of the process of diagnosis? Myth 1: ADHD is overdiagnosed. Fact: While there may be concerns about overdiagnosis in some cases, many individuals with ADHD go undiagnosed and struggle unnecessarily. In some cases, people are misdiagnosed with anxiety, depression and other symptoms that can stem from ADHD. Accurate diagnosis and treatment are crucial. Don't be afraid to get a second opinion and search for those who specialize in ADHD and are up to date on the current research. Studies suggest that less than 20% of adults with ADHD are aware they have it. Others estimate that up to 75% of adults with ADHD may be undiagnosed. Only about a quarter of those who know they have ADHD are receiving treatment. Imperfect Pathways is here to help you live your best life with or without ADHD. Understanding ADHD is the first step in making an informed decision on taking your first step in your ADHD journey. ADHD can look different in different people - this is because there are various types of ADHD. Hyperactive and Impulsive type ADHD features symptoms like fidgeting, an inability to stay seated, incessant talking, and a tendency to act without thinking. The emphasis is more on hyperactivity and impulsivity rather than inattention. Inattentive type ADHD is characterised mainly by difficulties in sustaining attention, following through on tasks, and organising activities. People with this type of ADHD are often forgetful, easily distracted, and may overlook details. Combined type involves a combination of symptoms from both of the above types.
