A friend reminded me of an exchange we had a few years ago when he was concerned about the cost of adding a new team member. It went something like: Q: “What will hiring this person do to the bottom line?” A: “Good question, but first, what will hiring this person do to the top line?” Whether or not the person will fill a “revenue generating” role, the top line question requires thinking about the team fit, culture contribution, and growth of the organization. #1 question people ask me: "How do you build a phenomenal team?" My answer is always the same: Recruit 5-star talent! Just like Nick Saban didn’t turn Alabama into a powerhouse with 3-star recruits, you can’t build a top-notch team without top-notch people. Training and development are super important—they definitely make a difference. But at the end of the day, the most valuable piece of your team is the talent you bring in. "I don't hire people who have been laid off or fired from a previous job" Let's look at some high profile examples in the NFL to test that bias. Bill Belichick - fired with .450 record at Cleveland - 0 Super Bowls Hired by Patriots: .687 record and 6 Super Bowls Andy Reid - fired after 14 seasons with Philadelphia - 0 Super Bowls Hired by KC and has a .723 record and 3 Super Bowls (and counting?) Mike Shannahan - fired with .400 record at Rams Hired by Denver .616 record and 2 Super Bowls Tony Dungy, Tom Coughlin, Pete Carrol, Gary Kubiak...you get the point. Just like in the NFL, there are a lot of other factors involved: culture, management, opportunity, market, collaboration, the talent around you, and more. Sometimes what you learn along the way is more impactful than the successes you previously had. The Hiring Managers with the above view are the same as the NFL owners who think hiring a Super Bowl winning coach will bring them a Super Bowl. If you’ve managed people for more than a few years, hired and fired more than a dozen times, you’ve built some “gut feelings”. Don’t ignore them. If you’re not excited about this person coming on board. Don’t proceed. Wait for the next ‘A’ player. Bonus tip: never put yourself in the position where you’re panic hiring. We started watching the Hard Knocks offseason episodes about the Giants last night and it really got me thinking about hiring (duh). Watching how they evaluate the talent they want to draft is fascinating, because only a part of the conversation is about the players’ skills. You hear an almost equal amount of conversation about their leadership capacity, confidence, passion for their craft, work ethic, etc. Basically, how they will grow over time and impact the people around them. This should be exactly the same conversation when hiring. What value do they bring to the company beyond meeting the job description: ?? Versatility: you don’t know what your company may need in 5 years, is this someone with a diverse range of skills?? ?? Growth mindset: is this person adaptable to change?? ?? Enthusiasm/ passion for the craft: is this someone who can increase the value of those around them with their attitude? If other people watched those first few episodes and immediately wanted to switch careers and manage an NFL team (like me), the good news is you can practice those skills anytime you make a new hire.

To those who maybe trying to get a better understanding of what I’ve done or want a deeper dive into my professional career. NFL Equipment Manager: - Over 20 years providing players, coaches, and staff with the things they need to optimize their performance and increase safety - Managing multiple major vendor accounts and relationships. When faced with a time crunch, I leveraged a national televised game to peacefully resolve a major vendor issue - Key figure in 4 entire organizational relocations in 6 months - Built working environments for team operations all across the US and multiple times internationally - Implemented new ways of operation to make department more efficient, save over 100 man hours, and delivered multiple projects ahead of schedule - Trained and mentored over 30 new employees while continuing day to day responsibilities during the relocation process - Central figure in multiple emergency organizational evacuations - Attention to detail saved players over $100,000 annually - Inner department communication due to constantly changing schedules and needs Business Development: - Through building authentic relationships, had over 45% of the NFL involved in a organizational project.
