“Children from less advantaged backgrounds start school up to 4.5 months behind their contemporaries.” What does that actually mean? What does 4.5 months lol look like for that child? It means that potentially development is almost half a year behind a child of exactly the same age. Brain development means no one can learn more than one new task at a time! We can cook a meal and chat to friends or family because we have carried out multiple steps before but try a new technique or completely new recipe we lose our ability to hold any meaningful conversation or cook an edible meal! So for a child who has not had time to embed preschool abilities and experiences they will start school missing basic skills, so they try to Learn those alongside all the rest that school requires. It is inevitable they will fall further behind, be that child who seems unable to follow instructions or respond appropriately when tackling new task. They will have: - less physical competency lower physical literacy and not yet experienced in key physical skills essential for school; - a smaller vocabulary and more limited comprehension therefore of instructions and tasks and to be able to express questions; - lower confidence in exploring and comprehending new challenges scaffolding themselves, with or without help, based on earlier experience; - a less positive self view based on how they feel they fit into the world and how they relate to others as they will “be behind.” We need to look again at how we prepare children for school #play is the essence of all learning but it is also the platform, the base for development and it has an important role in child development well beyond early years. We need to focus on the development and education of the “Unique Child”. Education should be designed to ensure ALL children the opportunity to develop, to play, to be creative and to find their strengths and their own abilities and to build as they grow through the system. Let's Be Silly or Do Nothing The idea of adding times for doing nothing and being silly to education programs has been on my mind for quite some time. In my one-on-one sessions or classroom activities with children, the only thing I hear from them is 'Today is Friday. Let it be silly day, please.' In our classroom circle discussions, while we adults are busy crafting various scenarios for them, the response we receive from them is 'The do-nothing zone.' Because they are truly COMPETENT! From this perspective, I believe we need to look at our perception of children. The child is strong, not weak; filled with curiosity and equipped with the power of wanting to know why. The power of high expectations guides them. They possess the power to show what they know and how to do it. Moreover, they explore life with the power of curiosity and wonder. The child is rich in life resources, capable of building. They are strong in forming relationships and interacting. They both create values and possess them, open to newness and diversity. PONDER THIS!!! In schools around the world, we often jump straight into teaching academic skills like math, reading, and science without first laying the essential foundation for social and emotional development. Key skills like self-regulation, social-emotional intelligence, a sense of belonging, understanding boundaries, making contributions, and finding creative solutions are critical for a child's overall development and success. However, many schools lack the proper programs and training to teach and maintain these skills throughout the educational years. Instead, interventions are often implemented only when problems have already become severe, making it incredibly difficult to reverse the negative effects. When we neglect to build this foundation, classrooms can quickly descend into chaos, and students struggle to thrive both academically and personally. Just like a garden needs good soil before it can grow beautiful flowers, children need strong social and emotional skills to support their academic growth.
