The ‘???????????? ????????????????????????’ applying for a full-time role? Give them a shot. They’ve worn multiple hats, taken risks, and hustled harder than most. They know how to make things happen with limited resources, and they’ll bring that energy to your team. Don't let a?s?s?u?m?p?t?i?o?n?s stop you from hiring a great employee.
Nick White Great reminder here! I think hiring is very similar to the old money ball situation of baseball years ago. Everybody fights over a small group of so-called ideal candidates leaving the rest to flounder. I really think the employer that starts to diversify who they're looking for and who they give a shot will start relating there's a massive talent out there that can be a game changer for their company.
The fear is they will leave to start their next something when they get inspired and just need a paycheck until then - I'd argue this is on the applicant/ entrepreneur to overcome - and it's not about giving them a shot - but I get what you are saying - give them a shot and speak with them.
My rule of thumb is to HEAR THEM OUT, if someone with an "unconventional" background or profile applied, they must have a reason for it!
Unique perspective and diverse skill set. Adaptable problem solver. Experience in navigating ambiguity. Potential for driving innovation. How do you view the balance between entrepreneurial spirit and organizational structure?
Such a great point Nick White! Serial entrepreneurs bring a unique perspective and a problem-solving mindset that can be a huge asset to any team. Sometimes, it's their diverse experiences that drive the most innovative solutions!
Hiring entrepreneurs could be the best decision you can make! They bring in their wealth of experience, resilience, and creativity.
Well said Nick. I was self employed for 15 years before I started in the IT field and it was very difficult to get into the field despite going back to college and being in the middle of gaining my Bachelor degree. I still do side work for long time customers and do a little online reselling because it is fun. People do not seem to take this type of entrepreneurial spirit into account when looking at a resume. Just like you, I urge hiring teams to look at these resumes with self employment as a bonus not as a detriment to peoples qualifications. Those of us who have done it know how difficult it can be.
They have badass skills that 99% of people don't!
I'm with you, Nick White! Rather than just dismiss then, engage them in a conversation. Dig deeper and you just might have an innovator, a leader, a problem-solver who can help your business thrive!

1 周Thanks for acknowledging this topic. It can be very hard as a serial entrepreneur transitioning into traditional employment. I’ve worked with many and have been successful, but it is quite a challenge, especially that initial discussion.
