If the U.S. Machine Tool production had stayed steady since 1981, it'd be the world's second-largest exporter today. Instead, it's now the second-largest importer ?? That's a staggering fall from grace. And it gets worse—the entire machine tool market is smaller today than the machine tool output then, adjusted for inflation. We talk a big game about reshoring ???, but let's be real—it's not just about building factories. Global supply chains are deeply embedded, and until we fix the machine tool industry, the backbone of manufacturing, reshoring is just talk.
