Please welcome Grace Kirchner to the team! Grace is a USDA Northern Forest Climate Hub (NFCH) Fellow based at The Ohio State University. She will be working closely with OSU, NFCH, and NIACS teams to contribute to the modernization of #climatechange vulnerability assessments for Northeastern and Midwestern forest ecosystems through #geospatialanalysis and stakeholder engagement. Grace received her MS in Natural Resource Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and her BS in Meteorology from Western Kentucky University. Outside of work, she enjoys being outdoors, traveling, and playing video games.

With peaks higher than the Colorado Rockies, annual precipitation of 6.5 inches, and temperatures plummeting to -128 degrees Fahrenheit, Antarctica is the highest, driest, coldest, windiest and emptiest place on Earth. But it’s not completely barren; two species of penguins and their neighbors — visiting scientists and technicians at the three year-round U.S. research stations — are among the continent’s inhabitants. And we can’t forget the birds, whales, seals and an abundance of sea life that populate the harsh but beautiful environments. Discover what makes Antarctica so unique and important in “Antarctica by the Numbers” factsheet and “A Kids Guide to Antarctica." These two new learning resources are now available to parents and teachers looking to inspire and educate kids about Antarctica, an icy landscape critical to the future of our planet. ?? “A Kids Guide to Antarctica”: https://bit.ly/487YeEJ ??"Antarctica by the Numbers”: https://bit.ly/3YuJ2hT

Love to see this kind of interdisciplinary approach to climate resilience, and at my alma mater to boot! Bringing the climate science and policy communities together continues to be the best way to help inform our understanding about the risks of #climatechange to society and the interventions that are needed to help mitigate those risks. On the whole, a more climate aware society is a more resilient one. #climatesecurity #resilience?

In a recent article from The New York Times that considers a collapse of West Antarctica's massive ice sheet, Rob DeConto, provost professor of the College of Natural Sciences at UMass Amherst’s Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences, was asked to weigh in on the likeliness of a "worst-case" scenario. DeConto argues that "scientists need to keep finding ways to ground their models in observations from the real world." Math and meteorology go hand in hand, which can be challenging. Sound familiar? Then check out our new interactive tool, “Math for Weather and Climate: Interactive Tool for Divergence and Vorticity”! This interactive tool is a great resource for meteorology students and instructors. It helps you explore the math involved in two key concepts in weather and climate: divergence (the expansion and spreading out of a wind field) and vorticity (the “spin” of a wind field).? Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gVJYMiWw
