Why is the Fediverse a great alternative to traditional social media platforms? - it prioritizes decentralisation - it is focused around privacy - it allows for a higher degree of user control. And these are only some of the reasons. Instead of being controlled by a single corporation, it consists of independent but interconnected servers, allowing people to communicate across different platforms, and without being locked into one ecosystem. Unlike commercial social networks, that tend to rely on advertising and algorithm-driven engagement, Fediverse platforms typically offer chronological feeds, no intrusive ads, and greater respect for user data. All that makes it a more ethical and transparent choice for those who want to escape corporate surveillance and algorithmic manipulation. Additionally, the Fediverse encourages community-driven moderation rather than top-down enforcement, reducing issues like arbitrary bans and corporate censorship. The Fediverse also fosters innovation and diversity, as different platforms (like Mastodon for microblogging, PeerTube for video sharing, and Pixelfed for photos) cater to specific needs while remaining interoperable. Overall, the Fediverse is a user-first alternative to traditional/mainstream social media that empowers individuals and communities, rather than profit-driven companies who own the platforms. Fediverse EDU second: Do you know what ActivityPub is? ??None of the fediverse would be possible without ActivityPub ??Why It Matters: ActivityPub allows users on one platform to interact with users on another (e.g., someone on Mastodon can follow someone on Pixelfed). It’s like creating a universal way for different social networks to “talk” to each other. ?? Your benefit: you are not confined to just interacting on one platform. Now you can share content across a multitude of platforms reaching a broader audience. Best of all ActivityPub enables decentralized social networking, enhancing user privacy and control. ??What is it: ActivityPub is a protocol used to build decentralized social networks, like Mastodon and Threads. Authors like Christine Lemmer-Webber, Evan Prodromou and Jessica Tallon wrote and developed the protocol. They wanted to make it easier for social networks to communicate with each other, even if they’re on different servers. It Started in 2016, and it became an official web standard in 2018.

Many countries are now grappling with the reality that their critical digital infrastructure – social, search, commerce, advertising, browsers, operating systems, and more – is subordinated to foreign, increasingly hostile, companies.
