1 + 1 = 2 all day, everyday, but often times I see the equation presented as 1 + 1 = 5?? Now, just because something is presented one way doesn't make it true, aka factual. Often when something is simply presented verbally, or in quick on the job training, it changes from day-to-day, presenter-to-presenter, or trainer-to-trainer. Write everything down, & place it in a central location to ensure that the math correctly maths for your small business or nonprofit every time. This week we are spilling it all. Because the second huge taboo(after S*E*X) is money. How much is my expertise worth? Something that I struggled with a lot is fixing my price when people invite me. How much is one’s worth? When you have been socialized as a woman and worked in non-profit, this question is a landmine as we do work a lot for very little. So, how do I go about it? Instead of trying to figure out my worth on my own, I decided to go with what I was worth for the person inviting me. If someone wants me to come, it’s because they think that I have something to bring in terms of expertise that they may not have. Therefore, I am worth the same as they are, plus an extra for taxes and benefits. How does it work? I ask the person what is their hourly rate, and I request the same plus 20%. This way, if I am invited to a non-profit run by volunteers, I’ll ask nothing, or maybe just enough to cover the trip. But if I am invited by, say, a university, I’ll ask to be paid the same hourly rate as the teacher inviting me, plus 20%. That way, I don’t have to think about it anymore. And it may spark discussions about income inequalities. BONUS!

“For the public good” is good for all of us. Offering my expertise to non-profits brings me much satisfaction and joy. Helping others builds community, raises skill sets, enriches lives, and pays back a millionfold. I started doing free work as a student in the “Aware” group at fifteen. We did simple things, helping older adults or the less fortunate, like walking someone’s dog, getting groceries, or painting their flat. I’ve continued as my skill sets expanded and have never looked back. If you have a little spare time and a not-so-special or special skill, share it with others. I hate telling a potential client their idea likely won't win funding, but I will if I feel they're going to waste their money by hiring me to write for said-project. ?? It's not because the idea isn't a good one... But because winning grant funding for a nonprofit requires so much more than a good idea. Funders need to see: ?? A clear and urgent problem ?? Your proposed solution ?? Logic model(s) and/or theory of change ?? Simple evaluation plan to measure the success of your proposed solution ?? Detailed and realistic budgeting Unfortunately, no one tells you that you need to bring all of this information to the table. Trust me - it took me five years to figure this stuff out, and I did a ton of self-education. Junior Achievement has been my non-profit of choice since I was a junior in high school. I was a part of 2 companies we learned to run from scratch and I’ve been volunteer teaching in elementary schools for 20 years now. I wrapped up my 3rd grade daughter’s class last week and was overwhelmed with love in each and every Thank You card I received.
