Top Tips for New College Students: 1. Get to know your TAs - A lot of TAs are twice as likely to help you with things you are struggling with if you take the time to get to know them 2. Really the syllabus in its entirety for every class - a lot of syllabi will include important information about policies and deadlines that professors may not necessarily announce at the start of the semester 3. Befriend an upperclassman - people who have been there longer know more than you and it is always good to have someone more experienced to get advice from when you run into a tricky situation (you definitely will) 4. Go to the review sessions when they are offered - they exist for a reason, there will always be concepts most people struggle with more than others, and the more prepared you are for the exams, the better you will do 5. Like with the TAs, introduce yourself to your professors - professors are more likely to grant extensions or offer extra help to people who they are familiar with in person rather than just another student on the roster 6. Go to the career fair - yes it is overwhelming but they are the #1 way to get internships and make connections while in college 7. No all-nighters, no days without food - not providing your body with basic needs is a good way to burn yourself out quickly and perform poorly on exams, get some sleep instead of cramming, you will need it

Apprenticeship programs are by far the most effective training programs available. The reason why I highly endorse this type of program is... 1. businesses or organizations hold robust training programs to teach critical knowledge for success in roles 2. businesses or organizations then offer on the job training to give apprentices the opportunity to apply the knowledge they gained to work 3. apprentices are paired with mentors (peers or supervisors) to ensure that they understand the work requirements for their jobs; they become independent and empowered to drive value for their employers. Last night I was fortunate to present a resume workshop to the University of Minnesota Duluth Rocketry Team. I wasn’t there to promote Cirrus. I wasn’t there to encourage these students to apply to my open internships. Yes, I wore my Cirrus polo and name tag but didn’t once mention what Cirrus does as an organization. This might seem backwards to hear from someone on a recruitment team. So, why? University and Industry partnerships are much more than standing in front of a group to only sell & build talent pipelines. They are to serve & support, to give back & share knowledge, to grow fellow institutions that support our WHOLE community. I hope that my fellow UMD bulldogs increased their confidence about resume writing last night, feel competent to show off their skillset next week at the UMD STEM Fest Career Fair, and know that someone in the community is in their corner, whether they become employed at Cirrus or not. I’m not an expert but was honored to share with my Alma Mater the lessons, tips, and experiences I’ve had in the last two and a half years reading student resumes. Just maybe these same students will come say hi at next week’s career fair. (I hope so!)
