2023 saw an unprecedented surge in U.S. solar power generation. ?? A recent Solar Market Insights report by the Solar Energy Industries Association and Wood Mackenzie, the nation is on track to conclude the year with nearly 33 gigawatts of solar capacity deployed. This represents a remarkable increase from the 21 gigawatts installed in 2022 and stands as the largest annual expansion of solar energy in the country's history. Breaking News:?This morning, my team and I at New York Solar Energy Industries Association released a comprehensive policy roadmap for the State of New York to double its rooftop and community solar deployment goal from 10 gigawatts by 2030 to 20 gigawatts by 2035.?New York is behind schedule to achieve our CLCPA requirement of sourcing 70% of our electricity needs from renewable energy by 2030.?To put us back on track, we need to take bold action. Today's roadmap release sets an ambitious but achievable goal, and charts a path to guide New York through the next phase of our clean energy transition. While rooftop and community solar is currently being deployed at a rapid pace, achieving 20GW by 2035 will require high impact policy intervention to address permitting, interconnection and economic barriers to distributed solar deployment. Our roadmap details these regulatory and legislative policy proposals and calls for bold action to support near-term progress toward New York’s ambitious CLCPA requirements. This report is the result of many months of hard work by every member of our team. Our campaign to achieve 20GW by 2035 is supported by a growing coalition of diverse organizations that want New York to reach its nation-leading clean energy and equity goals. Clean Flexible Energy, LLC, a joint venture of The AES Corporation and TotalEnergies Holding USA, Inc, has secured a conditional commitment for a loan guarantee of up to $861.3 million to finance the construction of solar PV and battery energy storage systems in Puerto Rico. Project Marahu includes 200 MW of solar PV and up to 285 MW /1,140 MWh of stand-alone BESS capacity. The two solar PV installations will produce approximately 460,000 MWh of energy annually, enough to power about 43,000 homes. “Project Marahu will play an integral role in improving Puerto Rico’s energy resilience and affordability while helping Puerto Rico meet its ambitious clean energy and climate goals,” the DOE said in a statement. “The project will support the retirement of fossil fuel power plants reliant on imported fuel, increase renewable energy generation, and enhance grid resilience. “The clean, affordable electricity generated by this project will replace the power produced by Puerto Rico’s diesel and coal plants, eliminating the pollution associated with those plants. The project will generate power directly to Puerto Rico’s grid and provide energy storage benefits necessary for Puerto Rico’s goal of achieving 100% clean energy resources by 2050.” #cleanenergy

Another Big Win for Local Solar Energy: DMEA Secures $72M in USDA Funds JUNE 17, 2024 – Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Delta-Montrose Electric Association (DMEA) was one of two Colorado recipients of its Powering Affordable Clean Energy (PACE) program. DMEA was selected to receive a partially forgivable $72 million loan to fund the construction of a 20-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic array with an additional 80 megawatt hours (MWh) of battery storage. “This is a monumental win for DMEA and our members. This investment not only enables us to produce affordable energy, further stabilizing member rates, but it also improves local grid reliability. The energy we generate right here at home can be efficiently delivered to our members, bypassing the reliance on distant power plants and extensive transmission lines,” said Jack Johnston, DMEA Chief Executive Officer.
