Most comments to this post on VC jobs debated whether using speed as a selection criterion was fair or efficient. To me, the striking element is that 450 people applied for the job opening. I’ve trained VC applicants for years, and they all report the same phenomenon. The chances of breaking into Venture Capital via a job advertised on LinkedIn or other platforms are infinitesimal. Yesterday, we had an amazing opportunity to host Saumya Agarwal , the VP at Peak XV at The VC Fellowship by HIREVC. Her session on "How to make your Career into Venture Capital" was full of amazing insights. Here are some of the key takeaways: 1) Joining as an analyst is the most common way that people get into VC. 2) There is a common belief that Tier 1 VCs only hire from engineering or CA backgrounds, which is not true. 3) The most popular career options post-analyst are MBA, Founder's Office Role, and some get promoted to Associates. 4) There are different non-investment roles in a VC that include operations, tech, HR, and legal. VC firms typically operate under an investment thesis, and thus the portfolio will represent this thesis. (For example, at HPVP, our investment thesis focuses on early stage tech/software companies anchored to the US Midwest, Toronto, and Atlanta.) If you align to a firm's thesis (industry, stage, region, product type, etc), you can focus your search by using that VC's job board to find opportunities. ??Big props to Michaela Tupini at Zendesk for putting this resource together!
