Thanks to Linda Hardesty of Fierce Network (Questex) for tapping me for some of my thoughts on telco industry shows this year compared to the many other industry events that I attend during the year in support of neXt Curve broad TMT research agenda. Hype, hurts, and it hurts these events overtime if the agendas don't meet customers, vendors, and the industry where they are. While the hype theatrics are fun, transformation is serious business, not a circus of aspirational stuff that no one knows how to implement to anyone's benefit. Hype boils down to bad business (congregations in food courts),... bad event. See you at the next event. I hope they get better in 2025! I have a blast either way! I had fun writing this op-ed, where I thought about the #telco shows this year and how many of them were kind of lame. Each industry has its own personality and vibe — kind of like concerts. If I had to describe the personality and vibe of the traditional telecom industry today, I would say it’s mainly older white men who are generally very nice, very smart and quite nerdy. They wear baggy, out-of-style suits and like to talk about “how they solve problems.” That's not very much fun. But there are fun things happening, if only telco would pivot.
