Let’s get real for a second ~ I wouldn’t be where I am in my career – a 6x ex-Disney intern, CS graduate, LinkedIn Top Voice – or my life if it weren’t for programs like Rewriting the Code… While you might say that’s an overreach, it’s not. I didn’t have access to Computer Science education in high school. So I had to go outside of my little bubble to find it. When I did, I found a supportive community, a safe space, a sisterhood, and a plethora of resources. So then I went off to college… and all of these things disappeared. If you’re a CS major, you know that the culture can be quite toxic. I felt like I had no community. Class wasn’t a safe space when even TAs and professors would talk down to me and discourage me. An ultra-competitive culture and pressure to fit in with the majority negated the possibility of sisterhood. I felt so alone and isolated my first year in college. But I began to find what I needed, bit by bit. I turned to other girls in my extended community (beyond school) for inspiration and motivation. I began to build my network and my personal brand through attending community events and programming. I landed my first internship with an industry partner of one of these organizations. I even landed my first full-time job offer through one of these events & programs (namely a career fair/hiring summit-style event)! Organizations like #RewritingtheCode are creating opportunities and helping women like me find success in different technology fields. When I couldn’t find what I needed to succeed and thrive in my career, I didn’t give up. I sought it out and found a community of hundreds who became my friends, advocates, mentors, colleagues, and sisters. ?? So, for the tech girlies, what are you waiting for? Unexpected Opportunities & A Humbling Experience ? A few weeks ago, I was surprised to be directly approached by a recruiter on LinkedIn for the LinkedIn Summer’25 Internship in Software Engineering. Initially, I thought it was too good to be true—how could this opportunity just land in my inbox? But when I received the official test link, I realized this was the real deal. The DSA round was challenging, with three problems to solve. I fully solved one and made progress on the other two, but some test cases didn’t pass. Despite my best efforts, I didn’t advance to the next round. While I didn’t make it this time, I’m grateful for the experience. It was my first time going through a process like this, and it taught me a lot. I’m taking these lessons forward and continuing to sharpen my skills. Ah, my "school days" were all about absorbing information and discovering how to make sense of the world. From elementary to high school, I'd be navigating friendships, extracurricular activities, and the occasional 'bout of procrastination. When it comes to exam preparation, I'd probably have a mix of strategies. Sometimes I'd be meticulously organized, making color-coded study guides and flashcards. Other times, I might find myself pulling all-nighters fueled by caffeine and determination. But ultimately, I'd aim to understand the material rather than just memorize it. I've seen the stress and dedication that goes into preparing for these exams, from late-night study sessions to last-minute cramming. Transitioning to college-level material would be a big step, filled with excitement and maybe a bit of nervousness. I'd be exploring new interests, meeting diverse people, and experiencing a newfound sense of independence. It's fascinating to see the diversity of subjects people pursue and the passion they bring to their studies. College exams would bring their own challenges, requiring deeper critical thinking and analysis compared to high school. And then there's the job search, ahh! As graduation approaches, I'd likely be juggling internships, part-time jobs, and networking events while polishing my resume and practicing for interviews. Landing that first job would feel like a major milestone, but the learning wouldn't stop there. I'd continue to grow and evolve in my career, pursuing new opportunities and honing my skills along the way. Overall, my student experience would be a dynamic journey of growth, discovery, and occasional moments of stress, but always with a sense of excitement for what lies ahead, just like yours!
