Nexstar’s television stations serving the state of Michigan will host an exclusive multi-market live telecast of a debate between the top two candidates for U.S. Senator from Michigan on Oct. 8th at 7 p.m. ET. The hour-long debate between U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D) and former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R) will originate and air exclusively on WOOD TV8, its sister station WLNS-TV in Lansing, and be simulcast across the country on Nexstar’s national cable news network, NewsNation. Key reach metrics for the largest broadcast networks are now well below 50%, says MoffettNathanson Research -- down from their levels of 70% to 75% ten years ago -- with cable TV networks now under 30%. ABC, CBS, and NBC broadcast networks are estimated at a projected reach for persons 18 years and up of 46%, 41%, and 41% respectively, as of the second quarter of 2024, while Fox comes in at 34%. Does television get the credit it deserves for the contribution it makes to advertisers’ profitability? Commercial broadcasters in the UK have come together to collaborate in an initiative which will demonstrate the positive relationship between TV viewers and advertising outcomes. In this asiCast, Sameer Modha, Measurement Innovation Controller of ITV, discusses with asi’s Research Director Richard Marks the development of Lantern, the multi-outcome measurement panel being set-up by Channel 4, Sky and ITV. This collaboration is regarded as essential to provide advertisers the persuasive evidence of everything that television delivers and to ensure that it gets the credit it deserves. Nielsen noted that while broadcast and cable saw a decline in viewership year over year, it was not to the same extent as the 2022-23 intervals. In May 2023, traditional linear TV viewing fell 7 share points year over year. In comparison, it was about half of that with a loss of 3.4 points this year.
