Meteorologists are predicting an intense Atlantic hurricane season this year, expecting 20-25 named storms with the possibility of 30 or more, according to AccuWeather. Colorado State University forecasts about 23 named storms. The potential for a stronger hurricane season indicates a heightened risk for weather-related production outages in the U.S. oil and natural gas industry. Last year, there were 20 named storms, but only one hurricane made landfall in the U.S., and none significantly impacted U.S. petroleum infrastructure. The Atlantic hurricane season, as defined by NOAA, runs from June 1 to November 30, with the most severe hurricanes typically forming in August and early September. Hurricanes often hit the U.S. Southeast and Gulf Coast, affecting petroleum markets by disrupting crude oil production and refinery operations, especially in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) which accounts for 14% of U.S. crude oil production. Refineries along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast, which represent nearly half of U.S. refining capacity, are vulnerable to flooding and power outages during hurricanes.
