The GROWTH project’s Mentoring Program successfully took place across partner countries, aiming to support young entrepreneurs and promote positive entrepreneurship for individuals with fewer opportunities. This question, like many discussed in the public arena in Australia, is the subject of dishonesty on both sides. While the universities are dependent on foreign students for much of their funding and continued operation, the situation is framed in terms of the economic development of Australia. Meanwhile, and this is a bipartisan policy from both the major sides of Australian politics, the ruling elite also avoid the issue of an investment in public education. The result is a slow but sure strangling of the public education system where the value of education only equates to some perceived economic value and the Australia public becomes less and less equipped for the kinds of societal debate necessary for a healthy modern democracy.
Federal Member for Wentworth, Allegra Spender, told Parliament that she was baffled that both the Government and the Opposition are prepared to risk Australia’s largest non-mining export industry – and the Australian economy -?by imposing caps on international student numbers in Australia, “An export that last year contributed half of our GDP growth and supports a quarter of a million jobs,” she said. The Group of Eight conservatively estimates that capping international student enrolments to pre-pandemic levels of 2019 for Go8 members against 2023 post-pandemic enrolment figures would cost the nation over $5.3 billion in economic output and over 22,500 jobs in the economy. The History of Entrepreneurship Education Traditionally the UK has been a highly entrepreneurial nation and recently Luke Pittaway, Colette Henry, John Thompson and I have undertaken a study that traced the history of Entrepreneurship Education (EE) in the country from the middle of the 20th to the present day. It was a fascinating study and yesterday we heard that our long- awaited findings are being prepared for publication in the Taylor & Francis journal "Management and Organisational History" under the title "The History of Entrepreneurship Education in the UK:: 1860-2020". The article has gone through a rigorous review and revision process and is now ready for publication. We are grateful to the anonymous reviewers and the editors, Christian Stutz and the special issues team for their advice and suggested improvements. It will be published online initially, before being included in a Special Issue of the journal early in 2025. Editorial feedback on it makes the point that the way we "have explored and narrated the history of Entrepreneurship Education (EE) in the UK truly brings a new understanding of current EE". practices". We certainly hope that that will be the case and that the article will provide a sound platform for the future development of EE in the country and elsewhere. We do give some brief consideration to this but would encourage readers not just to think about the future but to explore new approaches to research and teaching that ensures Entrepreneurship Education is fit for purpose in the 21st century. Today, we are pleased to welcome approximately 25 lecturers, educators and trainers from Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and Germany to a three-day training on Entrepreneurship Education at the University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki. The training programme has been developed jointly by all the project partners and will reflect different entrepreneurship education competences and pedagogical approaches that the partnership has analysed as being less often included in entrepreneurship education programmes, following the value-based creation process. The aim of this training is to equip lecturers and educators from various disciplines with the skills to teach entrepreneurial thinking and action and to apply entrepreneurial methods in their courses. Ultimately, students should develop an entrepreneurial and proactive mindset and skills that enable them to turn their ideas into value for others.
