I didn't get Nominated or I didnt ...................??????I got in trouble for writing the other reasons last time. So we will leave it as this! ?I get awards nights are personal preference, My preference is not to attend and others like them. ?But can someone tell me, What are we celebrating??? ?When every piece of data associated to children's social care is on the rise? ?? The award ceremony I would like to see is this one. ?????????? ??Less kids are coming into care year on year. ??Less children's homes are having to be opened year on year. ??We see kids leave these homes with the same opportunities as any other child. ??We see whole families being supported to be back together. ??We see the system flipped where early intervention becomes the norm instead of kids having to move into a homes as a "first resort". ?That to me seems like it is something we can all celebrate and I think the people who have had a part in this should be commended. ?Before, You start typing angerly???? to tell me this is a difficult role and we do great things and it should be recognised. Or ?These awards put a spot light on social care and makes people start having different conversations. Or ? Your d*ck. ??Do you think we will see that award ceremony?

I have a professional update to celebrate (and others to come!). I have been selected the 2024 Educator of the Year by the Minnesota State Board of Trustees. This is the highest honor award for excellence in teaching in the entire Minnesota State system. Only 4 are selected out of dozens of applications. I am grateful to have several mentors and inspiring students in my professional journey who motivated me to pursue better and more innovative ways to delivery my teaching and to connect students to more relatable experiences and real world examples with maintaining high academic rigor. Some of my innovations include mixing a traditional course on Labor Economics with a study abroad component, jigsaw activities to discussed peer-reviewed articles, simulations of immigration process experiences, Pre and Post Debates, self introductions in online courses with sharing gratitude and savoring experiences, and incorporating students to real data to analyze local issues. Further, my activities also include direct discussions on equity, disparities, implicit bias, and examples that demystify the economics profession. #IlookLikeAnEconomist

What does the belief that work is important and it has to be hard to to us who believe it? It creates a centerpiece in our life—a career. This is a mixed blessing. On the positive side, it means that we have meaningful work to provide to society. We feel valued and useful. We advance civilization, hopefully, with our contribution. We are rewarded for bringing value to the world. And because we expect it to be hard, we can do hard things. This is a huge advantage in our society. But there is a cost. Our career does not have to be our life. It is a part of our life but it is not the only part. Some of those other parts of life, like friends and family, artistic pursuits, volunteer service, spirituality, and simply having fun, are valuable. I’ve credibly believed I was on my deathbed three times so far, causing me to reflect on my life. Interestingly, my career was the furthest from my mind as I judged whether I used the life that I was given. In the mid-1990s, I was helping my father get to chemotherapy appointments. We were at Sloan-Kettering cancer center in New York City. I was about to finish law school and move west. He was fighting for his life. There were young child patients all around, some wearing headscarfs to conceal their little bald heads. I was reading the New York Times obituaries, which I never do. There was an obituary for a lawyer. The story was filled with professional accomplishments and ended with a quote from him. It went something like “I was glad to be a lawyer and work on many cases. A lawyer is like a fork. It can do many different things as long as it is sterilized between uses.” Maybe this person was a great success—but didn’t he just admit he was a tool? The contrast been that quote and the sight of kids just trying to hang on for a few more months could not have been more striking. If it worked for him-great. How do you want your obituary to read?

Well said Maggie Swift!! I always leave these quarterly Entrepreneurs' Organization workshops feeling inspired and energized. Yesterday's session covered Strategy - what is it, how do we communicate it, and is it sustainable to meet long-term goals? We workshopped the differences between strategy (what) and execution (how), what makes our firms unique on delivering our brand promise, our core purpose/passion and how we make a difference in this world, and our 10-year BHAG. Strategy has been a central anchor in our business and the development of our brand, purpose, and long and short-term goals. It was re-affirming to workshop this and arrive to similar conclusions with some refinements and new ways of thinking about various aspects of it. The other fun part is how applicable so much of this is to a capital project. Projects need an overall strategy and definition of success, otherwise the teams will never execute and align on a cohesive plan to get you there! EO Los Angeles
