The Blue Highway Beacon No. 3 is already out and circulating -- this, our client-and-follower advisory for Thursday's slate of UK elections. Here, we focus a bit on what might be expected after the expected Labour sweep in terms of tech, arts and entertainment, (particularly the music sector, as one of Blighty's proudest and most reliable exports), and for the prospects of the legal sector, as in -- how a Labour Cabinet may be comprised of more barred lawyers than ever before. It's a bit on the long side, even for us, but coming just six days after Beacon #2, we find we've got a lot more to say. And some set of somebodies out there seems to agree, as our email campaign open rates are coming in at 60+ percent. We must be doing something right. Read on here: https://lnkd.in/eg6NXvD2

Today is voting day! The day we get to make important decisions about who represents us in local councils and in the European Parliament. I'm voting for council candidates who pledge to turn empty houses into homes. No matter who we are or where we come from, we all need a secure home. Far too many of us are living on edge, not knowing where we’ll live year to year. As voters,?we can use our power to force councils to turn empty houses into homes?for people who need them, no exceptions. There’s more than enough space for us all. Check to see who has signed the Empty Homes pledge in your area before deciding who to vote for. https://lnkd.in/eY3_saVV

These two commitments are important. However, the Carers ACT campaign is calling for 8 commitments - including 3 with a specific mental health focus. It's very hard to see why the ACT Greens are not supporting these mental health initiatives. We are in the middle of a mental illness pandemic - that is only getting worse - and many people, especially the young, are struggling. Hundreds of Canberran families, including my own, have struggled to give their loved ones proper support. This is continuing. In 2020 and 2021 alone there were 78 deaths by suicide in the ACT. I know personally know of 6 young people who took their lives in 2021. If these figures aren't significant enough for the ACT Greens to implement changes to the chaotic state of the ACT mental health system, then what is? The ACT Greens have had carriage of the mental health portfolio for the 4-year term during which they were given direct feedback from many Canberrans on their struggles, including that of my own family in 2021. Changes could, and should, have been implemented way before the current election campaign. Surely it would have been better for your campaign to say "We listened to you and this is what we did about it"! ACT Greens Emma Davidson Shane Rattenbury MLA
Today we welcome the written statement from the Greens, regarding two of our asks for the ACT election. Thank you to the ACT Greens for supporting the carer card and land for a new respite and support centre. We also acknowledge the verbal commitments from Labor to these same asks, and the broader commitment from the other parties and independents to carers. We look forward to more public statements, and support for all our asks in the coming weeks. Read the Green's statement here https://lnkd.in/gXU8FGeg

For all the educated people suffering from bad roads near their house Sorry to say it, but the problem is with we the people Most of the educated middle class people do not know the name of the corporator, who represents them in their municipal body : 70-90% did not leave their home and go to vote in corporator elections. 40-50% of them do not know the name of the MLA, and did not leave their AC homes to go and vote in MLA election If the educated middle class will keep away, and only the slum dwellers will vote, then who is the elected representative going to represent : you or the slum dweller ? For a reality check, please go and check in the nearest slum area. a) Lot of streetlights will be installed, 3x more than your areas which pays 100x more taxes b) Every streetlight will be working. c) All the gully-type roads will be concreted, d) Every thing that municipal can do, will have been done 10x better than the road in front of your house Democracy is a contact sport, not a spectator sport ??

I don't know where you are reading this from, but here in the UK we had an election. People voted, we often refer to this as 'doing our civic duty'. But 40% of those registered to vote chose not to. I find this figure really disturbing, that is a large section of people who are disempowered, disenfranchised, disheartened. Even allowing for the numbers of people who may not have voted because of our ridiculous new voting regulations that is still too many people without a voice. It starts with us, what are we doing in our organisations to make sure that all voices are heard? What are we doing as citizens to enable our neighbours voices to be heard? There are steps we can take organisationally and personally to help others to speak up, get in touch let us start a conversation and let us see a much larger turn out at the next election.

Many of us went and voted this election season; But from where do we get the right to vote? What is its status as a right and can it be changed? The right to vote is given in Article 326 of the Constitution and is further elaborated in the Representation of the People Act, 1951 (RP Act). The RP Act lays down the qualifications and restrictions on the Right to vote. The Supreme Court (SC) had before 2023 given multiple conflicting judgements on the Right to vote and its status as a right. Some judgements referred to it merely as a statutory right while others held that it was a constitutional right, What’s the difference? Well, Statutory rights can be amended by a simple majority in the Parliament however, constitutional rights require a 2/3rd majority to be amended. The SC settled this in 2023 in the Anoop Baranwal judgement where the majority opined that voting was a constitutional right. This right was also amended in 1989 when the age to vote was lowered to 18 years from 21 years this was done by way of the 61st Constitutional Amendment. The right to vote is arguably one of our most important rights and we should all exercise it.
