The recent Portfolio Summits conference in LA was a wonderful event filled with networking and discussion topics highlighting current trends surrounding the wealth management industry. Last year we had our first exit for investors since the pandemic and have three more in the works for the first part of this year. One of my favorite people to listen to is Dr. Kevin Elko and one of his phrases is to "keep chopping wood". The analogy is about cutting down a tree. If it doesn't fall after a few hits from your ax, you keep chopping at the tree. You don't give up until you see the desired results. Besides one-off acquisitions, the only real distress is coming from multifamily operators whose projects have floating-rate debt and have tapped out insurance reserves. Most of these deals have paused their distributions, some have issued capital calls, and others are doing far worse but are working with their lenders to a resolution.
