On my desk sits a piece of paper stating that I can legally call myself an architect. Yet, it is neither pessimistic nor overly strict to say that I am not one. Architecture, by definition, is an art, and art has its own definition. Throughout my studies and professional career, I have only occasionally come close to that definition, but art demands constant dedication. We do not have part-time artists, just as we do not have part-time architects. For the sake of respecting the meaning of words, I still believe those who hold this license would be more accurately called building technicians. But in any case, with this piece of paper on my desk, I will fold a paper plane at least that way, it will serve a purpose.

Young Architects, the best thing you can do to progress in your career is….. GET TO SITE I would like to think the majority of people that go in to Architecture do it to get stuff built, that’s the goal, right? Take an idea from your head, to paper, to computer, finally to site. So many young Architects do not get exposed to the realities of construction in their early years so can never truly appreciate lots or really important aspects of the process; - how materials go together, what happens at the junctions and how you allow for tolerance and create robustness. - sequencing, the order in which things are done, who does them and what elements rely on others - Contractors and sub-contractors, how people work and who is responsible for what (and how these are coordinated) We can’t just design in isolation, we need an acute understanding of the construction process to provide design that are buildable but also push and challenge the process. THESE ARE NOT JUST LINES YOU ARE DRAWING! I know, I know, it’s difficult to resource projects and younger Architects may not have the experience necessary for site but even if it’s just shadowing a more senior member of staff… We need to get young Architects to site, who’s with me? ?? If you found this helpful, repost it so others can make this positive shift too P.S. tell me about your early site experiences, or the one important lesson you learned from getting to site. —- I’m Chris, an Architect on a mission. Construction Administration is an essential part of what we as architects do. It is an opportunity for collaboration, feedback (both ways from architect to contractor and contractor to architect), and ultimately ... creating the very best results for our clients. As a designer, it is my opportunity to see the alchemy of what we designed on paper - in real life. Proof of concept. We often find ourselves at our desks and it's hard to get away. But when we do go to job sites it reminds us why we do what we do. There is not greater honor than to shape the built environment. And tremendous appreciation for the contractors and all the minds and hands that bring buildings to life. #architect #generalcontractor #contrstruction #alchemy
