Representation matters because it allows your voice to be heard as well as seeing. We have to understand that we're standing on the shoulders of our great grandparents, our grandparents. Because of them. I am where I am in the state Senate. There's also a reflection of our nation's great model out of many, one meaning that so many of us bring so many different qualities and characteristics to the table. But all of us together and rich, this great melting pot that is our country. There's not enough people that have compassion for one another. I don't care if you're Republican, Democrat. It's just first respecting the person, no matter what color you are. We always have to understand and know our history so that we can proceed and move forward in a positive way. There is no American history without the African American contribution. Understanding that there was 246 years of slavery, that there was 89 years of segregation, and there continues to be a fight, you know, to this day. When you talk about oppression, but it's also important that when we are, as Black peoples, having the opportunity to write legislation, that we do so with the meaning and the impact and the influence of our ancestors to rewrite systems of oppression and create equity and justice for all. There are people that went before me so that I can sit here. And I think that's when the reality set in that yes, I'm in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing. You become somebody that you know people want to emulate. I want to inspire somebody else to become a senator or congressman or a City Councilman or school board member. I'm blessed to be able to talk about Black History Month, to share what Black History Month means to me, and to be able to contribute to not only Black history, but all history.
