Thanks for joining us in 2024! The Coalition launched just a few months ago in September, and thanks to your support, we’ve already made great strides. We’re proud to represent thousands of New Yorkers and counting, united in our mission to keep this city the world's best place to live and work. Here’s a look at three important developments this year in NYC: ?? Starting January 5, 2025, New York will become the first U.S. city to implement congestion pricing, a policy reinstated by Gov. Kathy Hochul in November: https://lnkd.in/emea4Yx3 ??? In a significant move this December, the City Council passed City of Yes for Housing Opportunity, a key policy priority for embattled Mayor Eric Adams: https://lnkd.in/exg5jeiX ?? While crime has decreased this year, mental health issues and discovery law reform remain pressing concerns, and New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch is calling for urgent changes to address them. Tackling these challenges will be crucial for ensuring public safety: https://lnkd.in/erCu8Dft Looking ahead to 2025, we’re excited to build on this momentum. Expect to hear from us in January about how we can continue working together to shape New York’s future. #NYFuture

Yesterday, Philadelphia City Council kicked off hearings on the proposed 76ers arena. Hearings continue today. Watch live at phlcouncil.com/watch City Council has an obligation to ask tough questions, advocate for necessary changes, and make sure the arena – if it moves forward – does more good than harm. I can not deny that my working-class, Black and brown constituents would benefit immensely from family-sustaining jobs and lucrative contracting opportunities created by 76 Place, provided we have a stronger and enforceable Equal Opportunity Plan. But I also represent a large constituency that rightly sees Chinatown, the Gayborhood, and Washington Square West as irreplaceable havens for vulnerable communities in Philadelphia – including my constituents. If we allow this arena to move forward without doing much, much more to protect impacted communities, I worry we will be on the wrong side of history. Given SEPTA’s impending “death spiral”, the 76ers should cover any additional costs the transit authority incurs due to the construction and operation of the arena. We need a more detailed Equal Opportunity Plan with stronger remedies for noncompliance. And impacted communities like Chinatown deserve a genuine community benefits agreement with a robust anti-displacement plan. These issues should be addressed before Council votes on the arena proposal.

It was great to see housing policy championed so widely by policymakers at this year’s Conservative Party Conference. House building is vital for economic growth and a big part of this is ensuring we continue to support the appropriate planning and housing reforms to get more young people onto the property ladder. A great article by Inside Housing summarising the key housing policies discussed at Party Conference below. https://lnkd.in/eK7jM5TN? ? #housing #planning #politics #partyconference #economicgrowth ?

Jefferson County, Missouri - Government has implemented CivicPlus’ agenda and vote-taking system, enhancing government transparency and public engagement. The new system allows council members to vote digitally during meetings, with results displayed instantly on the county website. This shift provides residents with real-time access to meeting agendas, motions, and votes, promoting transparency and accountability in local governance. As municipalities continue to evolve digitally, these tools play a crucial role in fostering trust and open communication between elected officials and their communities. A nice piece by Helen Barrett. I particularly like the suggestion of restricting the age of #councillors serving on #planningcommittees limit but to which I would add there should be mandatory #training and regular refreshers on #planningballance. I think something else that comes out strongly in this blog is the failing #politicalsystem (if anyone wants to understand why #PoliticalParties say one thing #nationally and #Politicians something totally the opposite locally, read "Why we get the wrong #Politicians" by Isabel Hardman). The time has come to remove the obsolete #FirstPastthePost system (which most people I have question on it seemed to think a majority of seats equates to having received the majority of votes) and replace it with #ProportionalRepresentation at local and #national level. Perhaps digress a bit there so a final thought is; #PlanningOfficers should be given the professional respect they deserve by #Councilors and not used as the whipping post for posturing to the #generalpublic. #urbanplanning #housingcrisis

In the wake of the election, there’s a flurry of analysis on why polling and public research fell short. Let’s cut to the chase: public polling, at its best, is an educated guess, and this election highlighted its limitations. For those of us in the homelessness sector, while it remains essential to research public opinion and test messaging, we must also stay grounded in real-world realities. Much of the polling and messaging research in our sector often doesn’t align with the complexities we see on the ground. When sharing this research publicly, it’s vital we communicate that it’s not an absolute truth—it’s a guide that can, and often does, contain flaws. Being transparent about these limitations helps manage expectations and ensures we build strategies rooted in both evidence and real-world insights.

It’s time we realize that affordable housing isn’t just a socio-economic issue. It’s also a public health imperative, especially, when quality is involved. Sad to see how the political debates surrounding this issue have overshadowed any reasoned public discourse on quality.
