We all have people in our lives that we struggle to get along with, whether it's a partner, boss, co-worker, friend, or family member. It's easy to dismiss their actions and shut down, but have we ever stopped to consider if they feel the same way about us? Do we exhibit these same traits that cause people to feel the same way? How many times do we think we are doing the right thing, or acting the right way, but someone else doesn't think so? We all have toxic people in our lives that we need to avoid and cut out from our lives, but why are we so quick to think we aren't just as toxic? The challenge is to take a step back and evaluate what we don't like about certain people. We can either try to understand why they act the way they do and show some grace, or use them as an example to make sure we're not just as toxic ourselves. Being the "bigger, better person" isn't just about cutting people out of our lives, it also includes evaluating our own behavior and making the necessary changes. Often, anxiety convinces us that we must control things beyond our reach, but therapists emphasize that trying to fix everything for others can lead to unnecessary stress and undermine our own well-being. Instead, we should focus on what we can control—our actions, communication, and boundaries—while allowing others to take responsibility for their own emotions and choices. It’s liberating to recognize this and let go of the burden of things outside of our control.
