Uisce éireann Irish Water is a brillant place to learn huge array of things about water and wastewater and how we bring clean safe drinking water to 1.7 million homes and 178,000 businesses. We’re a regulated business with significant commitments to deliver a resilient water services. We’ve Customer teams, a huge Operations Team who have real challenges every day to keep the water flowing. We also deliver huge strategic programmes with over 8,000 different assets from reservoirs, to pumping station, water and wastewater treatment plants and a whopping 63,000 kilometres of water pipes, much of it old and in need of upgrade. Our graduates will be exposed to the science bit, hydreology, laboratory testing of water, how we build and manage vast amount of infrastructure, to energy and to the future using renewable energy sources. Uisce éireann Irish Water use 20% of all electricity in the public sector, to keep all of our assets running. They will also learn about leakage, about communications, finance, corporate governance, regulation and the required HR Strategy and Safety Strategies, led by our People & Safety Director, Dawn O'Driscoll They will also learn about the complexity of IT transformation and the business services and systems needed to run a complex and growing business like ours. It’s brillant to welcome our new graduates. Please ask us all plenty of questions. There is so much to learn. You’re joining a team with a brillant purpose; led by CEO Niall Gleeson and that is to enable communities all over Ireland to thrive by supporting economic growth and development and connecting much needed new homes, to a sustainable resilient water supply. CORE (Career Opportunities in Real Estate) is an eight module, workforce development program designed specifically to promote career awareness and attract underrepresented populations to the real estate industry. Part of what lights me up is introducing my colleagues to over 200 students in our Spring 2024 cohort. These students represent over 350 colleges and universities in 46 states. On a personal note, make the most of connections so that someone will carry your name into rooms that you aren’t in. Lastly, Karen reminded us that the graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take the first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry out their dream. "The feeling of making demands isn't something that comes naturally to people from low opportunity backgrounds.” We were lucky enough to head into the offices of our partner Beam last week. We sat down with the fantastic Ziyad about the need for career mentoring, learning to ask for a job you actually want, and what being a career mentor means to him as socially mobile talent himself: “I’m a refugee. I was born in a council house. My mum was a single mum with three children… Me and my siblings would have all been Zero Gravity alumni.” For Ziyad, career mentoring is an opportunity to help out someone who was in his shoes - someone super smart from a similar background, navigating the same unknown waters he crossed himself a few years ago. “What I'm seeing a lot with her is a lot of things I experienced myself post graduating.” Swipe to see how Ziyad is helping his mentee with some graduate career advice - even just where to start with getting a job after university - and some of his general life wisdom.
