Smart Holiday Shopping: How to Save Big and Stay on Budget As the holiday shopping season approaches, it's more important than ever to stay mindful of your budget, especially with rising costs of goods and food. To help you navigate this busy time, we’ve put together some practical tips based on the three W’s of smart shopping: Who: Start by making a complete list of everyone you plan to buy gifts for, including any upcoming events that may require a present. Also, consider any gatherings or holiday parties you're hosting and make sure to include any necessary supplies or hostess gifts in your plans. What: For each person or event on your list, decide what you’d like to buy and set a spending limit for each gift or item. Don’t forget to factor in extra costs for holiday hosting essentials, like food, decorations, or special attire. Where: Compare prices from various retailers—both in-store and online—so you can score the best deals. Be sure to check if price matching is available to ensure you’re getting the lowest price possible. By following these simple tips, you can stick to your holiday budget without sacrificing the joy of giving. Need help organizing your holiday budget? "I guess we're in full holiday mode," I thought as I strolled through a Chicago sparkling with string lights and festive decorations. Then I saw it—the shiny digital billboard promoting Amazon’s early holiday shopping deals. Just the photo I needed for my latest LinkedIn post, I thought…but then it switched to a Paramount+ promotion. So there I stood, phone in hand, awkwardly waiting for the Amazon ad to come back around. Here’s the photo—and a new post with some insights into early holiday shopping trends that are changing the game. (Apologies for the double post, but LinkedIn doesn’t allow editing to insert a photo!) Early Shopping Is Becoming the New Norm ?? For retailers and marketers alike, holiday shopping starts earlier each year. This season, 78% of shoppers have already jumped on deals, now Black Friday starts in October! Why Shoppers Love Early Deals ?? Early shopping lets people spread out spending, skip the December chaos, and actually enjoy holiday prep. By October, Amazon Prime Days, Target Circle Week, and early “Best Deals of the Season” ads had already flooded feeds and screens everywhere. And platforms like Meta and Pinterest hosted holiday webinars as early as July. It’s the only time of year we gladly mix “Jingle Bells” with conference call ringtones! Tips for Retailers Looking to Embrace the Trend ?? Spread Out Your Promotions: Launching early sales events catches eager shoppers while still keeping something for those last-minute and post-Christmas buyers. Optimize Your Inventory: Stock up on high-demand items now! You don’t want a warehouse full of novelty socks while everyone’s after the latest tech gadgets. Enhance Your Online Presence: Make shopping easy! Boost digital marketing and show off your deals across platforms—shoppers should be able to order your products as quickly as they choose their Friday night pizza toppings. Build Consumer Confidence: Clear, early promotions reassure holiday shoppers they’re getting a great deal—nothing beats a confident buyer ready to check out. If you missed the early wave this year, don’t worry—there’s always next year. Just be ready with a plan to catch both early birds and last-minute shoppers. Happy holiday planning, everyone—here’s to a season of cheerful checkouts! ???

Holiday shopping season in 2024 is VERY SHORT. - Tied for shortest length in days over the past 20 yrs - Only 27 days between Thanksgiving & Christmas - 5 days shorter than last year - Last time it was this short was 2019 ARE WE IN TROUBLE?! the media seems to think so. How will it impact total revenue this holiday season? I charted the past 20 years and reviewed each year: - revenue for full holiday season (Nov 1 - Dec 31) - days of HSS "holiday shopping season" (?? - ??) According to my surface level analysis, it does NOT appear that revenue or revenue growth is impacted by the length of HSS. Revenue each year seems to increase, regardless. HOWEVER, there was one year that dipped. It also happened to be a year HSS got shorter by 5 days. BUT... this was 2008. We all know what happened in 2008. Yeah, the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). That was 100% the reason for the revenue dip. NOT a shortened HSS. For reference, HSS decreased by 6 days from 2012-13. Yet revenue still grew by 4% that year. My opinion: holiday season revenue is mostly impacted by macroeconomic factors & consumer health... NOT HSS length. Don't worry about a shortened HSS this year. Focus on executing your sales in a condensed time frame or even move your sales up by a few days to make up for "lost time." People will buy their holiday gifts in a smaller window, they typically don't forget about themselves or their loved ones. What are your thoughts? In for trouble? or just another year of HSS revenue growth?

As we approach the holiday season (I can't believe it's that time of year already!), our 2024 Holiday Outlook provides valuable insights for businesses looking to build relationships with Canadian consumers. This year, consumers plan to spend an average of $1,853 on gifts, travel, and entertainment, a 13% increase over last year. However, they are also becoming more discerning, seeking promotions, discounts, and higher-quality items. For businesses, this means several key takeaways: 1. Understand generational preferences Gen Z consumers are starting their holiday shopping earlier and prefer physical gifts over gift cards. They are also more inclined to use digital payment methods like PayPal and Apple Pay. Millennials, on the other hand, are increasing their budgets and looking for brands with compelling loyalty programs. Tailoring your marketing strategies to these preferences can help capture their attention and loyalty. 2. Enhance in-store experiences Despite the rise of online shopping, in-store shopping remains a crucial part of the holiday experience for many Canadians. Nearly 17% of consumers shop in physical stores more often during the holidays and intend to spend 9% more than the average consumer. Creating a festive and engaging in-store environment can attract these shoppers and boost sales. 3. Help consumers stretch their budgets While consumers plan to increase their holiday spending, 77% aim to spend the same amount or less compared to last year. Offering compelling loyalty programs, higher-quality products that last longer, and discount options can help consumers stretch their budgets while maintaining brand loyalty.
