On the eve of #July4, we must remember that #America was settled by #Immigrants. Economists have noted that by increasing the labor supply, immigrants have contributed to higher economic growth and that America needs still more immigration to alleviate national labor shortages.

From the Christian Science Monitor: “Do Immigrants Help or Hurt the US Economy? (The Answer Might Surprise You)” I want Congress to iron out reforms which enable appropriate legal immigration, allowing a more secure US border & a path to US Citizenship for illegal immigrants who contribute to the well being of our Country. ** I know many immigrants who want nothing more than to earn American Citizenship, serve our Country, and to pursue the American Dream. Yep….. — We have a labor shortage in the USA. Had it not been for tax-paying Immigrants, many jobs, which many American Citizens are unwilling to work, would remain unfilled, productivity would have declined, and our US economy would be in trouble. … take a look at the kitchen staff in any restaurant … take a look at the skilled workers on any construction site … take a look at the technicians who support your Internet, telephone, & other technology services … take a look at the employees who are rebuilding American infrastructure — They’re immigrants (many of whom also volunteer to serve our Country in our US Armed Forces) ** Those immigrants are productive, tax-paying, hard-workers, who strive to improve their knowledge, skills, & abilities. They create small businesses & grow our economy. ** Those immigrants know more about American representative democracy, history, and current affairs, than many American Citizens. They are not entitled; they earn their way, every day, by contributing to their communities and to our Country’s prosperity & security.
The TCP Republicans are so pathetically and nastily stupid about immigration. The facts are that our economy would be in shambles were it not for immigrants. Read some facts. Oh, and do I need to say every human being in the United States without exception is either an immigrant or the descendant of an immigrant?
Do immigrants help or hurt the US economy? The answer might surprise you.

How long before comprehensive immigration reform is enacted??“Rich countries, especially those with retiring baby boomers and declining birth rates, need greater sources of workers to fill in labor gaps and ease inflation. This is especially true in areas of the U.S. economy like construction, manufacturing, agriculture and transportation, which all generally see lower levels of participation from the native-born population.” Seeking Alpha “The?labor force participation rate?is the percentage of the civilian population that is 16 years or older working or looking for work. The biggest dip in the immigrant participation rate was in 2020, falling from 66.5% in January to 61.8% in April… After the COVID-19 low, the labor force participation rate of foreign-born workers rose faster than that of their native-born counterparts. By September 2023, the foreign-born labor force participation rate was 67.1%. The native-born rate was 61.8%.” USAFacts #immigrationreform #economicgrowth #immigration #labor #immigrants

Myth: When the U.S. welcomes refugees and immigrants, we neglect other underserved groups. Fact: Studies have shown, for example, that rather than lowering wages due to competition, the immigrant workforce has instead supported higher wages for all populations. States like Colorado and Washington have expanded affordable health coverage initiatives that not only aim to include undocumented immigrants but also enhance access for all residents. These policies contribute to stronger public health systems and improved outcomes for every community member. When we work toward equity, we work toward a better society for all. https://lnkd.in/gt_ptnDV

The likely immigration restrictions of the new administration couldn’t come at a worst time! The real crisis is that we don’t have enough people as we face a demographic cliff. When the US severely limited immigration in 1924, the large drop in foreign-born people was partially offset by the baby boom. Since about 1970, migration levels have recovered. But now we face below-replacement birth rates and an aging population — and there is no baby boom to save us! Plus, immigrants do much more than replenish the population. They bring a variety of new skills, products, innovations, and investments that make our economy stronger and our culture more vibrant. It’s not in OUR self-interest to lose all of that! #immigration #population #birthrates #aging #growth #decline

Professor Hernandez is correct. Perhaps now is the time to encourage the new Congress to update the immigration system similar to what they passed and Reagan signed in 1986 with the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA). This law primarily aimed at controlling illegal immigration, but also provided amnesty for nearly 3 million undocumented immigrants who had been living and working in the United States. Today, at a time of an already existing labor shortage for all of the reasons Professor Hernandez explains, in addition to a re-shoring driven expanding economy demanding an increasing workforce, it would be wise to keep the immigrant workers already in the country and control the needed inflow of immigrant labor going forward with an updated immigration system. Given our current economic circumstances, reducing and restricting immigrant labor would be significantly inflationary.
