Effective teaching comes from an understanding of how students learn, including a knowledge of cognitive science. As per the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, it's not enough to just know this - we need to know how to put our understanding into practice. The recently published AERO practice guides help teachers to do this.
?? Calling all teachers, educators and school leaders! We’ve just released 5 new practice guides aligned with our model of learning and teaching. Explore practical insights and research findings to help tailor instruction, set clear objectives, establish effective rules, deliver explicit teaching and foster self-regulated learning. Saw this post on how schools have incorporated “play-based learning” for students. I'm glad to see how learning has been transformed in our schools, and this got me thinking. How can we apply this to adults? Designing for adults requires a nuanced approach. I often ask myself—how can I incorporate the element of ‘fun’ and relatedness into adult learning? While we may not use the same “play” techniques, we can incorporate experiential learning, gamification, and collaborative problem-solving to create engaging environments where adult learners feel challenged and motivated. We can tap into intrinsic motivation, encourage exploration, and connect learning outcomes to real-world applications. It’s bringing together the “knowing” and the “doing” with an added touch of fun to drive engagement and connectedness. After all, learning should be a lifelong journey—not just about acquiring knowledge but enjoying the process as we learn and grow.
I mentioned at the National Day Rally that our schools are embarking on “play-based learning”. That means incorporating elements of play into lesson time, so that students can learn through play. I visited Woodlands Primary School and joined one of their classes to experience this firsthand. This was a math lesson for P4 students. But instead of doing worksheets, they refreshed their understanding of fractions through a game. The students loved it! They actively engaged one another, and learnt in a fun and engaging environment. I’m glad to see the positive changes taking place in our classrooms and schools. We aim to instill the joy of learning in all our students! ??: https://lnkd.in/g8mthbQ5 Ministry of Education, Singapore (MOE) (??: MDDI Photo by Terence Tan)
