Do what's right for you! One of the fun things about some of the projects I have worked on for Transport for London is telling other operators and authorities what we did, and more importantly why we did it. London 2012 is a great example: we did not honour the bid commitment to operate the Underground all night, but we found the right, and affordable compromise, to get all spectators away with a comfortable margin for error. I have been disappointed to hear of some world events copying some of the things London did, mistakenly believing the 'what' was key to transport's success (and low profile) in London 2012. It absolutely wasn't: what was key to success was the 'why': every service change had a rationale behind it. Hence, whatever your priorities and influences are, do what is right for your city, customers, staff, regulators, reputation, politicians, or the host city contract. Having hosted various parts of RATP and SNCF in London and on conference calls over the last few years, this week I was briefly distracted from sports I didn't know I was interested in to see how the Parisien transport system was holding up. The approach to some of the events (e.g. the Opening Ceremony not being held in a stadium) combined with the very compact nature of Paris Metro means they have a lot of station closures - some for only a few hours, and some for weeks within a security cordon. They also have a number of line suspensions whilst events take place. Despite a complicated system of permits and cordons, the press is telling me transport is coping well by not reporting on transport. However, automated operation on some lines means Paris Metro is operating some service all night during the Olympics: where it is practical to do so. I wonder what that might lead to :-)

Liverpool’s Proposed £2 City Visitor Charge: A Strategic Move for Growth? Liverpool’s Accommodation Business Improvement District (BID) has proposed a £2 per night City Visitor Charge, set to begin in June 2025. This initiative is designed to generate £6 million annually, with funds reinvested into public services, destination marketing, and a subvention fund to attract world-class events to the city. ?? Key Objectives: - Enhance Liverpool’s competitiveness in the visitor economy. - Encourage more overnight stays, which contribute significantly to local businesses. - Support public services, including street cleaning and infrastructure improvements. ?? Why It Matters: Bill Addy, CEO of Liverpool BID, emphasized the importance of this move: “Overnight guests spend more in the city than day trippers. This model mirrors successful strategies in European cities, helping Liverpool attract major events and drive significant investment.” This proposed fee reflects Liverpool’s commitment to fostering sustainable growth while maintaining its position as a leading destination for visitors worldwide. ?? Let us know your thoughts on this development and its potential impact on the tourism and serviced accommodation sector. #ProfessionalInsights #TourismStrategy #LiverpoolEconomy #ServicedAccommodation #DestinationMarketing

As the festive season gets in full swing, we're working together with Lumo, Northern, London North Eastern Railway, Thameslink, Great Northern, TransPennine Express, and Network Rail to keep passengers safe on station platforms during this busy period by urging everyone to follow a simple but crucial piece of advice: stay behind the yellow line. It is essential to prioritise safety: always stay behind the yellow line and wait for the train to come to a complete stop before boarding, avoid distractions, and secure luggage and pushchairs to prevent accidents. One gap in the rail industry that I wondered about was the use of video sharing platforms like YouTube for videos to guide people around stations. This is a new video from Network Rail showing people what London Waterloo looks like from the outside and inside, as well as the facilities there, where to find help, accessibility features and useful tips like where to find a quieter place to sit amongst the hustle and bustle of the station. As someone who suffers from a level of anxiety and finds visualising something a way to make life easier [Google Street View is an absolute godsend!] when planning a trip, this is a wonderful example of helping new travellers to the network as well as those with more specific needs than a large proportion of the travelling public. Videos such as these provide reassurance and give confidence, which I hope encourages more people to travel by rail. Hopefully this will be rolled out to other stations on the network, especially those where there are multiple exits or ways to get to platforms. I shared this internally with colleagues at Rail Delivery Group as well, as it is worth showcasing them and seeing how our organisation could help with such content. https://lnkd.in/e2JV8aht
