Join us in the fight against Ghost Nets ?? Ghost nets are abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear that continue to drift through our oceans and trap marine life. ?? Each year, these nets entangle around 14,000 turtles and countless other marine creatures. After a year or more at sea, many of these nets wash ashore on remote beaches, where we collect them and rescue any live animals still trapped. Northern Australia is a global hotspot for this issue. At Ocean Earth Foundation, we're dedicated to "turning off the tap"—preventing more nets from entering the ocean and cleaning up those already there. ?? Over 100 people killed and about 150 missing, and still counting. These floods have stretched across most of Rio Grande do Sul's 497 municipalities, have forced nearly 175,000 people from their homes. The numbers are flowing into disaster centres by the minute. Further heavy rains forecast for this week are expected to further exacerbate the situation in the region. The extreme weather has been caused by a rare combination of hotter than average temperatures, high humidity and strong winds. Rio Grande do Sul had always been a meeting point between tropical and polar air masses but these interactions have intensified with climate change. I hope that governments, hard-to-abate industries, climate change lobbyists, deniers, pseudoscientists, conspiracy theorists, media skeptics and climate heretics have their ear to the ground. Really worth having a watch to see how you could donate to a really good cause in #victoriafalls Welcome to EleCREW, a non-profit organization dedicated to elephant conservation in Victoria Falls, at the heart of the KAZA region, home to over 50% of Africa’s remaining wild elephants. Through our Ambassador herd and Community Cooperation and Conflict mitigation programs, EleCREW is passionately committed to fostering human-elephant coexistence. Within the National Parks, elephants have the right of way, facing primary threats such as illegal poaching and food and water scarcity, particularly during droughts, which are a regular occurrence in the Zimbabwean ecosystem. In this context, distinguishing between allies and adversaries is straightforward. However, outside of the Parks, the moral lines become less clear. Elephants often venture into rural and urban areas in search of food, which is frequently scarce within the National Park boundaries, especially during the dry season. This can lead to conflicts between the resident human population and the elephants, sometimes resulting in fatal consequences for either party, though more frequently for the elephants. This is the conservation space that EleCREW occupies—our programs aim to minimize conflict and promote coexistence with rural and urban elephant populations, encapsulated by the phrase “Living with Elephants”. There are currently 9 Conophytum species (7 species & 2 sub-species) from South Africa that are now Extinct in the Wild due to plant poaching since 2020. There may be more heading this way too. All of these were narrow endemics with very limited distributions and unique habitat requirements. The reality is that they probably won't survive as house plants unless grown under very very specific conditions by specialists. You may think it doesn't impact your life here in the northern hemisphere, but it does and it will. Wildfire and deforestation in the Amazon region has become a driver of climate change (loss of both a carbon sink and release of stored CO2 into the atmosphere) and global droughts (20B tons of water are released into the atmosphere each day by tropical rainforests- as the forest shrinks, droughts will become more common even here in the US). The Centro de Conservación Biológica de Operaciones Forestales (Center for Biological Conservation and Forest Operations) will develop novel wildfire research, consolidate existing scientific knowledge and data, educate community members on wildfire risk reduction and response, as well as train firefighters in the latest wildfire management approaches. When established, it will be the only resource of its kind in the Latin American and Caribbean region.
