Sports Media Rights and its future impact on the media landscape was a featured discussion during our 2023 Powerhouse Capital Investor Conference in Dallas. The National Football League (NFL) clearly drives the broadest consumption in the US market (93 of the top 100 programs watched in 2023) and thus commands the highest AAV in the market, but it is the creativity of their dealmaking & packaging of content to multiple partners that fuels a portion of the revenue growth we have seen over past cycles. Especially noteworthy is this weeks announcement of the new sports-first streaming bundle from Fox Corporation, Warner Bros. Discovery and The Walt Disney Company - this JV is a part of the great "re-bundling" of content in the cord-cutting/never era. This sports skinny bundle was the original concept of Fubo before the service included broader entertainment channels and this new service is similar to Kayo Sports in Australia (an OTT service wholly owned by Foxtel Group featuring Fox, ESPN, and Racing.com channels). These distribution trends are exciting alongside new entrants like Amazon, Apple and Netflix getting into the distribution of live sports content. The downside: As a consumer it is quite difficult to figure out where to watch as these rights are increasingly fragmented without unified search and discovery. There will likely be more consumer frustration(s) around certain content sitting behind additional paywalls like we've seen with NFL Wild Card game on Peacock last month - remember boxing's once very lucrative pay-per-view model? One will hope that this new bundle will be consumer-centric (yes, at an additional cost) in order to alleviate some of the pain points associated with the erosion of the legacy cable bundle... ESPN extends College Football Playoffs in $1.3B deal. Topline, (but not quite in the detail) this another 2X sports media rights deal. Coming on the heels of the Netflix and WWE 2X deal and the National Football League (NFL)'s 85% increase. What's interesting here is - while hardly niche' - College Football isn't the AAA+ rating giant the WWE or NFL are. So, in a - usually - steep decay curve of media rights values, the middle of the market is seeing the same percentage increase for the best content that the top of market is. And, good chance this content gets rolled into the "Hulu of sports," right? #sports #streaming #mediarights #espn

?? With the footy finals upon us (AFL starting tonight) I recalled being in awe of how 1 team navigated the draft in the past... In the 2004 draft, Hawthorn recruited three future stars: Jarryd Roughead, Lance “Buddy” Franklin and Jordan Lewis at picks 2, 5 and 7. If the draft were redone today, they’d likely go at 1, 2 and 4. An even bigger steal came in 2001 when the Hawks picked up Sam Mitchell at pick 36. In hindsight, he should have been closer to pick 4. He was overlooked by every other club. These elite recruitment decisions contributed hugely to an era of huge success, amassing four premierships in eight years. It just goes to show, a sports club success, largely depends on bringing the right people into your team. If you were a Sports Manager, how would you ensure you aren't missing your own version of ‘Buddy Franklin’? Ps: I’m not a Hawks supporter (go Swans!), but I’m happy to give credit where it’s due. ??

Let's sprinkle in a little context here: Live sports reign supreme as the most popular content on American television. In fact, all of the top 10 telecasts in the US last year were major sporting events. This trend isn't new; throughout US history, 22 out of the 30 most-watched television programs ever are Super Bowls (with the 2023 NFL championship game coming in at No. 2, just behind the moon landing). ANATOMY OF AN AD: ESPN x National Basketball Association (NBA) THE NEED: It's playoff season. Let's get fans pumped. THE CTA: watch the NBA playoffs on ESPN. THE 1-THING: the playoffs are where legends play. THE INSIGHT: today's players are tomorrow's legends. THE CONCEPT: tie in yesterday's playoff heroes with todays by splicing them into video with each other, sharing the court and the spotlight, showcasing that together, they carry a long unbroken tradition of excellence. the 30-second ad drums up feelings of nostalgia AND hype. WHY IT WORKS: this isn't the first time a league has tied in today's players with yesterday's to make a point. (The NFL does this all the time in broadcast promos.) This is the first time it was done via such visceral editing, making you feel like the players are there with each other, aware of and interacting with each other. This concept gets super hokey quickly without world-class editing. Thankfully, the editing *is* world-class, and avoids falling into the uncanny valley, which is a major risk. Also, let's talk about the music: the soul sample and production are deliberately retro, with modern rap heavyweight Future delivering laconic bars atop. This is an overt past meets future mashup which acts as the ad's unsung hero. This likely doesn't work if the song is more popular than it is (too distracting) or if it's simply a throwback soul track or a modern traphouse banger. THE VERDICT: Talk about satisfying the brief. Hell yes it does. Nothing high-concept or overdramatic about it. No copy. no VO. none needed. The NBA's stock-in-trade is, and will always be, it's players. Letting them take center stage is always a good call. But to really tell the history of the league in a bite-size hype video so effectively, so casually?
