Safety issues are common in primary and ambulatory care. Estimates indicate that 20%-25% of the general population experience harm in this setting. Around 4 out of 10 patients are harmed. Providing patients with a plan of action on their first enquiry is critical for effective care. However, practices often experience challenges balancing capacity and demand which prevent this – with patients told to call back later when practices run out of appointments allocated to urgent care. Effective triage can play an important role in mitigating the risk to patient safety that comes when a patient that needs an appointment cannot be offered one: by reducing the number of avoidable GP appointments, we free up clinical time to focus on enquiries with an urgent clinical need.
