?? Graduates Without a Driving License? ?? It’s crazy to think that some graduates are finishing their degrees and are still waiting to pass their driving tests! In the #geotechnical and #geoenvironmental industry, having a driving license is often essential for site work, but with delays in driving test bookings, it's becoming a real barrier for some graduates entering the industry. I’ve even heard of people who have a test booked for February 2025! That’s a long wait when you’re ready to start your first job in a hands-on field like ours. Why is the waiting list so long? Surely more driving instructors and examiners could have been trained by now?! #geotechnicalengineering

I can hazard a guess how it went so wrong.. lack of knowledge, competence, practice or true professional instruction AND proper assessment coupled with a person who most likely wants a licence NOW without putting the work in - I see it soooo often in this young generation (sometimes it's parents that drive that attitude, other times it's the student). Driving competence isn't something you learn through osmosis - it takes work. I know! how about a competence based licensing pathway? hmmm, could help many stay on task and focussed on learning the inns and outs of how to drive. "What a check ride can teach me" - I recently had a student take and pass a check ride for a pilot certificate. After it was all said and done, I shot a note to the examiner to see if they noticed any areas of deficiency which in their opinion was my shortcoming as an instructor. I got a very gracious response, followed by what the examiner classified as areas my student wrote down/noted during the exam as something they needed to do/see more of. There weren't many, but the ones noted were accurate: there sometimes just isn't enough time during training to cover everything in as much depth as one might want. Next time a student tells me 'I want to get a private license with the minimum required hours of training' I will have a specific reason and tangible evidence to back it up to try and dissuade them from that mental approach. Training is not about time, it is about understanding, experiencing, internalizing and mastering. No matter how long (or short) it takes.

One of my classroom practices involves play-based learning activities focused on road safety. Through role play, students explore and learn vocabulary related to road safety, including terms such as zebra crossing, traffic lights, colors, footpath, signals, and community helpers like traffic police officers. Additionally, they become familiar with safety items such as seatbelts, helmets, and basic vehicle maintenance concepts like checking petrol levels, ensuring proper air in tires, and understanding the function of the steering wheel. By immersing themselves in these interactive activities, students not only acquire essential safety knowledge but also develop practical life skills in a playful and engaging manner."

Hear me out, firearms instructors. ?? We've all felt the sharp edge of challenges that keep our life interesting, haven’t we? One of those rearing its head so often is keeping up with evolving training styles to meet diverse learners' needs. As a generation teaching next-gen students, you’ve probably asked yourself more than once- how do I engage this tech-savvy learner group effectively in traditional firearm safety and usage skills? It's like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. ?? Here’s some food for thought - what if these 'challenges' are opportunities in disguise? What if overcoming them simply means adapting and evolving our methods? An approach that worked wonders for one of the top shooting academies was introducing augmented reality (AR) into their training. Their baffling problem? Lack of interest among younger trainees towards textbook material and lackluster engagement during practical demonstrations. Solution – A twist on conventional learning using AR which offered interactive modules designed after real-life scenarios! ?? . Fast forward six months later - increased course completion rates and positive feedback from trainees. Imagine pulling the trigger in virtual treacherous terrains before stepping onto an actual firing range- learning made exciting yet educational– bridging the generational gap seamlessly! I understand not everyone might have access or resources for such high-tech solutions right away, but it underlines an important lesson – adaptability breeds success in any field. So fellow instructors, let’s take these existing challenges by the reins; let's infuse innovation into tradition where we can because at every challenge end lies meaningful progress waiting to be unlocked!???
