Apropos of Woody Zuill, I'm starting to figure out next year's conference schedule. If you would like me to speak or run a workshop at your conference, please let me know! My main topics are: - Formal specification: how you can find critical design flaws by modeling your systems before building it - How math can be used to write better programs - How software engineering compares to "classic" engineering, based on interviews with people who've done both - Empirical Software Engineering: what scientists have studied about what works in programming - Software history, esoteric languages, and other "special interest" topics. If you're interested in any of these, please message me!

?? Calling all JSS authors! ?? In this video, Felipe Fronchetti, Publicity Chair of the Journal of Systems and Software, introduces the JSS Showcase, an exciting initiative happening on JSS social media. This initiative is designed to highlight and celebrate the groundbreaking research of our authors. ?? What is the JSS Showcase? If you've recently published a paper with JSS, this is your opportunity to share your work with our global research community. Record a short, 60–90 second video to present your research, and we’ll feature it on JSS social media to reach thousands of researchers worldwide. ?? What to Include in Your Video: 1?? Your name, affiliation, and paper title. 2?? A brief overview of your paper, its key contributions, and its impact. 3?? Keep it short, engaging, and informative. ?? Pro Tips: Record in a quiet, well-lit space using landscape mode for the best quality. ?? How to Participate: Submit your video to [email protected] with the subject line "I want to shine!" Let’s amplify your research and inspire the global software engineering community through the JSS Showcase! ?? #JSSShowcase #Research #SoftwareEngineering

?? Bringing Storytelling to Tech! I’ve decided to dust off my mostly unused MA in Screenwriting and start writing on Medium about my journey as a woman in tech—sharing the lessons I’m picking up along the way, both technical and personal. My first article tackles a topic I’m really passionate about: why empathy should be a core skill for software engineers. ???? In a world driven by logic and problem-solving, the human element is often left behind—and I think it’s time we change that. Curious to hear your thoughts! Do you agree that empathy is often underrated in technical roles? I’d love to know what you think! ?? #WomenInTech #EmpathyInTech #Medium #TechJourney #SoftwareEngineering #TechCulture

Life is parallel. We multitask in our daily routines without even noticing. We communicate with each other and synchronize. Coincidentally, computer hardware is also parallel. Processing units multitask, communicate, and synchronize. However, programming languages are almost always sequential. Parallelism is something you add on top, based on the kind of parallelism you want to leverage. In his ChapelCon '24 keynote, Paul Sathre made a solid case for parallel-first programming languages in day-to-day development and teaching programming. This was an amazing and truly inspiring talk, especially if you are interested in computational science or parallel programming. I strongly recommend watching Paul's keynote.
