We do good writing here at Ragged Edge. And I can say that because it's not just me who does it!! But, to me, the WAY we write makes it special. European salary bandings for product designers in GBP: (For top designers, who lead through their work) Junior (35-45k)? Mid (50-65k) Senior (70-85k)? Lead (90-110k) Staff/Principal/Manager (110-130k) Product Design Director (140-160k) There are occasions people get paid more usually due to a rare skillset, and being in the right place at the right time. Great Visual/Motion designers often get paid the same as above, equally as valuable. Especially in agencies. I’d add Eastern Europe, is 10-20% less than these salaries usually because cost of living is cheaper. A few things I see work well: - Obvious things such as dual track for IC and Management, paid the same. eg. Principal and Head of is the same banding. - Content Design is paid the SAME as Product Design. Come on, it's 2024. - Don't judge people on their passport, if you're hiring a full remote team, pay people the same. Different for location-based roles.

Why do companies need to hire senior people to do mid-level work? Especially in Fortune 500 companies. In design, fresh talent often gets passed over in favor of senior designers, even for roles that don’t need senior-level expertise. It’s not that senior designers can’t handle these tasks – they can – but what does this signal to the industry? Bringing in fresh perspectives could open up bold new directions, but too often, companies play it safe by hiring senior ICs to handle work that mid-level designers could easily manage. What’s the impact then? ◆ For fresh talent, it’s fewer chances to gain experience. ◆ For experienced designers, it’s missing out on roles where they can tackle bigger challenges that match their skills. It's fantastic to see the evolution of global teams. A few years ago, hiring overseas was mostly focused on Software Engineers. Today, it's expanded across the entire organization: ?? Creative Teams are finding top-notch Graphic Designers, Video Editors, and 3D Animators from every corner of the globe. ?? Accounting Teams (yep, you read that right) are hiring US GAAP experts worldwide. ?? Customer Support Teams are expanding into multiple time zones to provide seamless 24-hour service. There's 100's of talented designers available. Yet, companies are struggling to hire designers. Thoughts as to why: - Companies want "end-to-end" product designers because they need more bang for their buck. That's the reality of the economic environment we're in, budgets are being squeezed. - Hands-off managers who don't want or can't execute IC work to a high level. In my world of working with VCs, these people will not work at early-stage companies. You need to be doing the work and leading. - Non-design hiring managers can't determine which designer will be a long-term fit. i.e. you will need a different type of designer at seed stage to series B. The founding designer role IMO is the toughest role to get right. - The return of "hybrid". London is a vacuum for top designers who want to be in the office 2-3 days a week.
