Exciting milestone—my granddaughter took her first steps this week! As I watched her proudly cross the floor, I couldn't help but reflect on the entire process for her to get there. The journey starts with crawling, then learning to walk while holding on tightly to both hands. Gradually, she needed less support—just a single hand, then a finger, until she was confident enough to let go, trusting that someone would be there to catch her if she fell.
This reminded me of how teams build trust. When assembling a new team to build a strong, values-driven culture, trust is developed over time, just like my granddaughter's steps.
One of the tools I share with clients is Catch & Correct?. We teach everyone to hold each other accountable to living the core values of the company. If someone’s actions are not in line with these values, their coworkers will, nicely, point it out to them. Initially, there’s skepticism that this will work, but when each team member truly values the culture, they actually appreciate being held accountable. The more they do this, the more people expect it. Those who don’t share these values or do not appreciate the feedback will not embrace this process, eventually self-selecting out.
Building mutual trust within a team ensures that not only will the work get done, but it will be done in alignment with shared values, leading to growth and success for the company.
It may take time, but the time is worth the investment to make work a place you love to go!?
