Industry opinion: To integrate commercial space services, share spectrum ?? Clay Bosler for Space News: 'Leaders throughout the United States and partner nations are developing commercial integration strategies. To fully realize these strategies, the U.S. needs to invest more than just dollars — it must adopt a forward-thinking approach to spectrum management that encourages collaboration between federal agencies and commercial satellite operators.' "The devil is always in the details. The clock has already started. I mean, this is not we're walking in and the clock starts. It is clear that the clock has already started." - Sarah Mineiro, Founder & CEO, Tanagra Enterprises, Senior Associate, Aerospace Security Project, Center for Strategic and International Studies, and self-described “Hill Rat”. There's a lot that has got to get done, and quickly. There's a new Secretary of the Air Force, Troy Meink, who just happens to be space-minded. But there are pressures, such as the fact that there isn't a federal budget; the continuing resolution that is keeping the government working ends on March 14th; extraordinary measures will be instituted to avoid defaulting on the national debt. So what can or should the incoming Trump Administration and Congress to secure U.S. interests in space?
Space Power: Trump 2.0, the 119th Congress, And The First 100 Days Transmission: 2025-02 President-elect Donald Trump has just named as his Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink, who has a deep background in space and defense. What will he need to succeed from the incoming administration and Congress? Laura Winter speaks with Todd Harrison, Senior Fellow, American Enterprise Institute, and much respected NASA and Defense Department budget diviner; and @Sarah Mineiro, Founder & CEO, Tanagra Enterprises, Senior Associate, Aerospace Security Project, Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and self-described “Hill Rat”. #Trump #Meink #SpaceForce

The increasing dependence on #space systems marks a pivotal juncture for global infrastructure, where space acts not only as a strategic asset, but also as a critical enabler for diverse capabilities. Curious how to build an ecosystem for responsive space? In our latest study we have identified four critical bottlenecks in deploying responsive space systems:

"Is this year’s dip in the Space Force budget a brief pause before the department begins the next phase of space investment necessary to fight and win in the future?" What does one have to do with the other? Maybe (just maybe) the answer isn't to simply play the same old budget game the services have been playing since time immemorial. Maybe you shouldn't assume a correlation between the size of your budget and the capability you can field. If there *were* a clear correlation, the budget we've allocated to GPS's ground segment enhancements over the past couple of decades arguably should have permitted us to geolocate pretty much anything in the known universe. In The Hill, Lt Gen (ret.) DT Thompson laments the Defense Department's 2025 budget request - saying, "The Department of Defense has rolled out its 2025 Budget Request, and someone’s asking for a cut...the request for Space Force was a 2% decrease." So? I'd respectfully submit that we decouple capability and total operating authority - that we put our appropriations where our public mouth is and look for efficiencies by actually leveraging commercial space offerings, rather than simply throwing performative SBIR dollars at new entrants. Act a little more like a company, and get your schedules trimmed and costs down. "My budget is bigger than your budget" games should have gone by the wayside a while back. Thompson goes on to say, "the Space Force and U.S. Space Command submitted unfunded priority lists that exceed $1 billion. Many items on these lists are classified, but the unclassified list includes requests to fund space communications and data relay services from commercial companies." So we've dumped commercial into the unfunded ("low") priority bin, and are holding Congress hostage: "If you really wanted this commercial stuff, you'll give us a nice budgetary bump." I know I sound like a broken record, but (maybe) we ought to turn the SDA approach loose and look for inexpensive, commercially-leveraged, short-time-to-fielding options rather than fight the good old Pentagon budget fight. Maybe?
Why is this year’s budget request cutting the Space Force?
