Today is Global Peer Support Celebration Day! This day celebrates peer supporters – the people who provide a shining example of overcoming the challenges often associated with mental health and or addiction issues for their peers. Peer supporters inspire hope and often fail to recognize and reflect on their contribution to serving others. Peer supporters forget to celebrate what they do, let alone acknowledge ‘they’ make a difference on a daily basis in the lives of those they serve (seniors, adults, youth, children, and families) or how transformative they are in mental health systems and the industry as a whole. This day of celebration and recognition highlights the impact and contributions peer supporters make in the lives of their peers who are facing mental health, addictions, and or trauma-related challenges. When ‘one voice becomes many voices,’ we begin to breakdown stereotypes and stigma, and awareness of and support for peer supporters and peer work develops and grows. Today in group supervision with a Child and Youth Mental Health team in Australia, I will be teaching the technique of tracking sequences. Tracking is a versatile technique used in various therapy modalities. I particularly draw on the work of Strategic Family Therapy and the Milan team. Today I'll be introducing different questions to help practitioners map out the "dance" or cycle that families often repeat. I'll also suggest creative ways to engage families in this process. For instance, have you ever thought about drawing a cycle on concrete with colorful chalk? You can use different colors to represent each person in the cycle, or to differentiate between actions, thoughts, and feelings. Another experiential approach is to ask family members to stand in different sections of the cycle to better understand each other's experiences. If the family can walk through the cycle on the concrete to reach the "end," it provides a powerful way to symbolize the conclusion of the challenging situation.
