Food banks as community hubs? This is a really interesting model. The Bread and Butter Thing supports thousands of families each week in its 90 UK hubs, providing food from farms, factories and supermarkets that was destined for the bin. But it’s more than just food. The service also provides a space for users to get together for a cuppa and a chat. As well as sharing information on cooking and shopping on a budget, the charity invites experts in to talk on topics like mental health and social housing. The idea is to reduce social isolation, build stronger communities and provide routes out of poverty. As well as being a really inspiring charity, The Bread and Butter thing sounds like it could be a fantastic volunteering opportunity if you have a hub local to you. It’s easy to find your nearest location on The Bread and Butter Thing website (I’ll drop a direct link in the comments). https://lnkd.in/dxP5XaeC #FoodBanks #Community #SocialValue #FoodPoverty #SocialValue #Volunteering

I have one of these in my village which I go to regularly, they try to get away from the ‘Food Bank’ tag because they are not one - often described as a Community Fridge ???? and open to all. In this case they collect all the food which would often go to landfill, sold at a heavily subsidised price. Supermarkets reduce their waste figures and support the local community- which impacts both their Social Value impact and Sustainability goals. Anything not sold is donated to local farms for animal feed, which is usually fruits and vegetables. As well as this they offer essential services to the community, it really is an essential service to many.

We have started working with the Bread and Butter Thing at Smart DCC. They are a really great organisation and offer a great opportunity for corporate volunteering

Thanks for the shout out Neil!
