April is National Minority Health Month, as recognized by HHS. A major component of the minority health discussion are the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH, also known as the Social Drivers of Health). On Juneteenth, we reflect on how far we've come and how much work remains in addressing the systemic disparities that minority communities continue to face, including a lack of access to basic healthcare services and underrepresentation in clinical trials. In particular, this lack of representation leads to gaps in treatment efficacy and overall health outcomes. As we commemorate Juneteenth, we must acknowledge these disparities and commit to closing the gap, ensuring equal access to healthcare for all.

We honor and celebrate National Minority Health Month (NMHM), established by Congress in April of 2022, with the following goals: 1. Promote educational efforts on the health problems currently facing minorities and other health disparity populations 2. Educate the public and health care professionals about health disparities, disease prevention and health promotion among minorities and other health disparity populations in the United States 3. Monitor our nation's progress toward the elimination of health care disparities. Collect and report data on health care access and utilization on patients by race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status. 4. the information gained should be disseminated to all health care professionals so that they may better communicate with all patients, regardless of race or ethnicity, without bias or prejudice.
