It’s amazing to see big-name chefs come onto Substack. Content used to be kind of a losing — or at best, break even — play for restaurant chefs: It's expensive to create and difficult to monetize at any meaningful scale outside of cookbooks. And for many (not the Ottolenghi’s of the food world, but for many of the chefs who primarily earn through their restaurants) cookbooks themselves are not always a major financial win. That they can immediately monetize via Substack subscriptions absolutely changes the game for restaurant chefs. I wouldn’t call myself an advertising expert by any means, but in my mind, this is an example of a perfect ad. Why? ????Relevant talent, bringing recognisable characters to a familiar location ??Relatable situational comedy ??????Inclusive and impactive ??Immediately identifiable and cements the brand’s USPs Stand out work from Lucky Generals Next steps? Could Yorkshire tea cement it’s sustainability creds with a B corp certification, or upping it’s work around ethical work practices for tea pickers (as Holly Rix has done at Typhoo Tea Ltd)? This would help further convert (ethically focused) consumers when in the tea and coffee aisle.

Every founder of a food and beverage plant based company should read this article. This what so many of the executives just don’t understand, who deeply animal based protein products are woven in to our culture. And yes until this is clearly understood these companies will not reach the broader and much larger part of the market in the next five to twenty years. Plant based protein products are not a regular part of our larger cultural history. Until it becomes part of the main stream this movement will never grow much beyond where it is today. These are the facts Jack and I eat less red meat today than I ever have and truly enjoy plant based products. But this years Super Bowl Party at our house will not anything close to a plant based celebration. Otherwise no one would show up. Nor is anyone attending requesting a plant based main courses.
