The 5th Festival on Citizen Participation and Deliberative Democracy 12-14 June.
Restoring our environment goes hand in hand with our democracy. Science is clear that we need to change, but how do we get from accepting that we need to change to agreeing on how to change?
I believe that JRC?research can highlight new opportunities in this interplay.?From our portfolio on #GreenTransition, and Knowledge Centre on biodiversity, to our Competence Centre on Participatory and Deliberative Democracy, we produce essential knowledge for @European Commission on these topics.??
JRC is a research institution placed at the centre of European policymaking.?This allows us to reflect on how the questions at the intersection of environment, the green transition and #democracy can be tackled in a democratic institution.???
Here, we believe that the citizens are the experts. They have a living experience of ecological crises and are also resourceful when it comes to solutions. Including them in our democratic processes can be the critical means for addressing environmental issues.??
By involving citizens in developing policy and adaptation measures, we can ensure their individual situations, expectations and vulnerabilities are known and listened to.?
??
This is by no means a small task.?
??
This is why at the JRC we study the field of democratic innovations taking place, in the form of citizen panels, citizen assemblies, participatory budgeting exercises, and more. And I want to invite everyone to join us in reflecting on what these forms of #CitizenEngagement mean for our present and future.?
This festival is all about reflection. I had the pleasure of opening the 5th edition of the Citizen Participation and Deliberative Democracy Festival, along with @Richard Kuehnel and @Humberto Delgado Rosa.?
