The research group of Donny Hanjaya-Putra, assistant professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering at the University of Notre Dame, have developed tunable biomaterials that can grow lymphatic vessels in the lab. Utilizing a gel made from hyaluronic acid, an environment is created where these vessels can grow in just a few days. These discoveries could be helpful for treating diseases like cardiovascular problems and lymphedema, a swelling, usually in the arms or legs, caused by a buildup of lymph fluid.
