Donations for NCNA's Compassion in Action (CIA) committee's December First Wednesday Food Drive (FWFD) will be accepted from Wednesday, January 1st through Wednesday, January 8th. The FWFD supports Common Pantry, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing food, essential items, and social services to those in need each month. As a community, we can come together and support those in need. In November, the CIA committee, along with the generous contributions from our friends and neighbors, donated over 334 pounds of food and personal care items to the pantry. The number of guests served by Common Pantry is increasing each month, and they are truly grateful for this kindness, as it provides essential assistance to their guests right away. ?? What to donate? January Item of the Month is Brown Rice! Brown rice contains more dietary fiber than white rice, helping you to feel fuller for longer! A donation of $35 can provide 20 bags of brown rice for Common Pantry guests. Other items needed: sugar, flour, cooking oil, ground coffee, cereal (whole grain, less sugar varieties), canned fruit, jar spaghetti sauce (low sodium) and dry pasta, whole grain crackers, soup, rice, easy prep meals (i.e., Hamburger Helper (low sodium or whole grain varieties, if possible), peanut butter, jelly/jam, cleaning supplies and laundry detergent, and sandwich-size zip-lock bags. Personal care items are in high demand: donations of full-size bottles of shampoo, shaving cream, soap, toothpaste, mouthwash and toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, diapers (baby and adult sizes), and toilet paper are always appreciated. See drop-off porch locations on our website To make a monetary donation or to learn more about Common Pantry and the incredible work they do supporting our community, please visit their website.

SCARCITY VS ABUNDANCE I came across this post this week and it gave me pause. If you are thinking about donating, giving, supporting, feeding this holiday season, please consider the following shared by someone who experienced scarcity: Donate manual can openers with the food!! Most folks donate the canned veggies and soup - many of these folks don’t have access to power- or buy pop top cans. Boxed cake mix with frosting (their families have birthdays, too. Even in my poorest of days we had birthday cakes made by mom ??) Canned chicken or tuna - because… Hamburger Helper NEEDS meat (and fresh meat is scarce). Remember they can rarely use boxed mac n cheese, it needs milk and butter which isn’t typically included in the food donation. Boxed milk!!! Kids need it for cereal (which they get a lot of) and they can use it for the boxed mac n cheese. Other Items they would LOVE: Oil Spices Tea Coffee Sugar Flour Dish Soap Feminine hygiene products And maybe a small stuffed animal in the bag ??

We are heartbroken by the devastation in LA and the countless people who have lost so much in the wake of these fires. Many of you have reached out asking how we plan to help those in need of gluten-free food during this uncertain time, especially as so many are displaced. We want you to know that since we heard of the fires, we’ve been working on a plan to get gluten-free food to the people who need it. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to find the right solution yet, but we are still trying. Our priority is finding established organizations or distribution centers that can set aside gluten-free foods for those who need them, and handle large volumes. While we have a few contacts who can receive gluten-free items on an individual basis, to make the biggest impact, we need a central distribution hub. If you know of any food pantries or distribution centers that can accommodate gluten-free food donations and?set them aside for people who need them, please let us know by reaching out to [email protected] And if you or someone you know is in need of gluten-free food, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help.

Did you know that in 2022 it was estimated that about 1 in 8 households in the U.S. experienced food insecurity? Food security means having enough food and not having to choose between food and other basic needs. Nutrition security builds on that. It means getting enough healthy food consistently and putting that food to best use — not only what to eat, but where to find it and how to prepare it. For people living in food deserts or food swamps - areas without convenient access to a grocery store or where the only sources of food are from fast food chains or convenience stores - eating healthy can be extremely inconvenient, if not impossible. This can leave people in historically disadvantaged communities with a shorter life expectancy and an increased risk of complex health problems. The American Heart Association is helping to combat nutrition insecurity across the nation through Federal, state, and local channels. The Association is driving policy change to increase access to healthy foods and connecting people with nutrition through community collaborations. The Association is also working with food banks, health centers and other community organizations to assess needs and connect people with the healthy food they need to thrive. Please consider a donation to AHA. We are two weeks away from the end of this campaign. https://lnkd.in/ey6jNuXp All donations matter and make a difference.

November marks the start of #WorldVeganMonth. Food banks often get plenty of soup and pasta, but what about vegan proteins such as tofu and jackfruit? Or dairy-free milk to enjoy a bowl of cereal or a cup of tea? Will you help us keep the food banks fed? Not only are you supporting people with dietary requirements, it's also good for the environment to go meat-free! ??Donate now to keep the food banks fed with filling and nutritious #Vegan foods. ??https://lnkd.in/ehWPcMVK #MeatFree #DairyFree #Charity #Nonprofit

This is important insight.
A lots been on my mind lately… I’m 26 years beyond the life without meals or food in the pantry, and the anxiety never goes away. The subconscious always has that feeling of not really knowing if we will have enough. Meanwhile, As the Thanksgiving season is approaching, I’ve been preparing for my annual Thanksgiving food distribution and it brings so many different emotions… As a child and an adult who was a receiver of food pantry food as my only source of nutrition… I’d like to share some insight. If you plan on helping families this holiday season, this list can provide you with insight on your donations: Donate manual can openers with the food!! Your response has good enthusiasm and intention, but it could be made more polished and clear. Here's a refined version: --- "What a beautiful and insightful post! If you're considering making that donation this year, PLEASE take a moment to read this – it can make a difference. Donating boxed milk has a significant impact, especially for kids, in providing them the comfort food like the beloved mac and cheese. You can also offer a choice between chocolate or white milk, which makes a big difference in their day." --- This version keeps the positive tone but makes the message a bit smoother and clearer for readers. Let me know what you think!
