As part of my annual spring tour of colleges, this past week I visited Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont. I'd lived in Bennington briefly about 20 years ago, but had never actually visited Bennington College until this year. Bennington is a small college of about 730 students with a charming campus filled with eclectic and thoughtfully constructed learning and living spaces. What stands out to me most about Bennington is its innovative curriculum. Rather than declare a traditional major, Bennington students develop an academic plan focusing on a single, challenging, often interdisciplinary intellectual problem or question. Students then embark upon an ambitious research process, including multiple internships, classes, and tutorials, culminating in a 30-60 page research paper as well as some sort of public-facing presentation or performance. Similar to a dissertation committee, a committee of faculty members works closely with each student to hone their research questions, ask questions of their own, provide feedback and support, and help direct the student toward opportunities after they graduate. Many Bennington students go on to graduate school to continue and deepen their research pursuits. It is an innovative, rigorous, and inquiry-driven approach to undergraduate studies, and the students I spoke to were extremely excited about the projects they had embarked upon. The type of student most likely to succeed at Bennington is someone who is, or aspires to be, self driven in their intellectual pursuits, who does not expect a uniform or cookie-cutter design to their program of study. Students enrolling at Bennington don't necessarily need to be natural leaders among their peers, but they do need to be community minded. Bennington students are generally oriented toward helping to make the world a better place, and are people seeking to use their educational experiences to make a difference. I've been meaning to share this post for a while, but a recent visit to Aderhold Hall 411 as a guest speaker brought back memories and gratitude for my time in the CSAA-M and CSAA-D programs in the UGA Mary Frances Early College of Education. The room was more than just a classroom. For me, it was a place of growth, learning, knowledge construction, and shared experiences. ?? The last faculty member of my master’s and doctoral programs (and also my amazing dissertation chair) Dr. Laura Dean retired this spring. While sitting in 411, I thought back to her “Last Lecture” and what I learned as a student. ?? During my teaching internship with Candace M. Moore, Ph.D., I discovered my passion for teaching. I had the opportunity to actively participate in the development of the syllabus, lead class discussions, and share my perspective as a practitioner. This experience provided me with valuable insights into the skills and dedication required to be an effective and engaging instructor. ?? From Dr. Diane Cooper, I learned that instead of solely focusing on identifying gaps in literature and research, the important part is in critically examining existing knowledge and identifying areas that require further questioning, exploration, and curiosity. The emphasis should be on uncovering what is already known and challenging assumptions, rather than simply seeking to fill gaps in research. ?? From Dr. Merrily Dunn, I learned that living in a place where you can get your hair done is a necessity (very much so - believe me). This is important from a practical perspective, but is also about where you can find community. I also learned that it’s just as important to know what you don’t like as what you do like as you consider work opportunities. ?? And from Dr. Laura Dean, I will always remember the question - how do you know that they know? I think about and use that question regularly. And as my dissertation chair, she gave the right amount of grace, challenge, and support to complete my dissertation and graduate with my friends. ?? While there's so much more to share, these are the core lessons I carry with me. #MFECOE #CSAAM #CSAAD

By the time students walk into their first-period classrooms today, they’ve likely swiped through numerous notifications from social media apps. They’ve navigated morning interactions at home, on buses, and in hallways, often starting the day sleep-deprived and anxious. These factors can prime them to be disengaged and distracted in class, right from the start. But as a middle or high school teacher, you know this well. Capturing and maintaining students’ attention each day can feel like running a marathon amidst constant distractions. Teaching in a way that fosters genuine learning is challenging, especially with the hurdles of today’s environment. However, offering students hands-on experiences outside the classroom where they can apply their knowledge is a powerful strategy to counter these challenges. Experiential learning opportunities provide students with experiences that develop lifelong skills, adaptability to new situations, and mastery of subjects. As a teacher, you’ve likely witnessed firsthand how these experiences transform abstract concepts into concrete understanding, much like your own internships and practical experiences did during your education. It’s one thing to lecture about historical events like the American Revolution, but quite another to immerse students in locations where history was made—standing in the room where the Declaration of Independence was signed, exploring the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, or walking the grounds of Valley Forge. My recent visit to Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, was eye-opening. We met with the Dean of Undergraduate Admissions who told us that their peer institutions are WPI and RPI. The biggest difference is Stevens' location, a stone's throw from Manhattan internships and coops. Amen! And who wouldn't want to be in Hoboken, a really hip and vibrant city just outside NYC? I was impressed with so much that I heard here. There are just over 4000 undergraduates, which I think is a sweet spot. Lest you think these are all techy nerds, there are 23 D3 sports teams and 20 performing arts groups. There's a new core curriculum which is very hands-on and tech-centric, and a coop program is available for engineering and computer science majors. Students can live on campus while working full-time in those coops or summer internships; NYC is so close that students have opportunities on their doorstep. The most popular major among applicants is mechanical and undecided engineering, but the most popular single program is computer science. And there are 12 different majors within the Engineering department, including Naval, Optical, Software, and Industrial and Systems Engineering. A new major here is Quantitative Social Science, a combination of sociology, technology, and data analytics. How cool is that? For admission, calculus and physics are crucial. Students without calculus can be admitted conditionally, but students without calculus or physics must take one or both the summer before matriculating. At $84K, the price tag is high, but merit scholarships start at $10K and go up to full tuition. The president's strategic plan includes doubling the number of applications in 10 years, effectively reducing their acceptance rate in half (currently 41-44%), while increasing full-time, high-quality faculty. I see no reason why that shouldn't happen. This school is a gem and should be on the rise. #Stevens #collegeplanning #collegecounseling
