?? What I learned Volunteering at Scout Camp ?? During the past weekend, I had the opportunity to reflect on my summer. I volunteered as an adult leader at Camp Royaneh, a scout camp nestled deep in the Redwoods. At the closing campfire, the adult leaders were recognized. ?? But I took away something even more meaningful. A couple of years ago, one of my scouts twisted his ankle on the first day! ?? He was slower than everyone else. Discomfort and frustration! ?? Faced with navigating the large camp on crutches, he considered asking his parents to pick him up. ?? But fellow scouts, adults, and camp staff rallied around him, offering him support and encouragement. “We see and recognize your struggle – keep going!” Ultimately, he chose to stay and to push through, ending the week feeling very proud. He had grown through overcoming adversity. ?? Can you remember something similar at work? When faced with an unexpected setback, a new team member might decide that "this is not for me" OR that "I am going to get through this." Peers and leaders – we all can have significant influence. ?But it takes effort, just like slowing down to accompany a fellow scout on crutches. #Perseverance #Teamwork #YouthDevelopment #GrowthMindset

Here are 5 things that made Leah and my Creative Waikato regional arts engagement work! ?? 1: Experience! Working with community in a variety of settings, whether voluntary or paid, was so valuable in drawing on past experiences and creating fresh ones ?? Never underestimate the wealth of practical knowledge attained in volunteering kaupapa too ?? 2: Partner in crime! Having a partner or a small team is immeasurably better than riding solo into the community. In our case, we worked super well together and this only amplified our efforts. 3: People-centric! Proactivity and passion flow when you love people, and the reciprocity and forethought needed to engage diverse people respectfully cannot be shortcut. Genuine care goes along way. 4: Innovation! Whether tiny cycles of iteration or bold leaps of risk, innovation is improvement. Being reflective is effective, and recognising the need to tweak, helped us continually power better community responses and reinvent our approaches. 5: Fun! People-work can be tiresome and draining, so it is essential to have fun every step of the way! We built in intentional pit-stops, but actually, the ability to spice up mundane tasks and daily activities happened naturally as we built trust and enjoyed being ourselves. The fulfillment derived from being a part of Rotary stems from the knowledge that their actions have positively impacted someone else's life. The individual believes that the desire to create a meaningful difference in the world is a crucial virtue to cultivate. They are constantly inspired by the dedicated individuals encountered within Rotary, witnessing the passion they invest in their roles and the tangible results they achieve. These individuals embody the ethos of the organization, embodying it in their daily lives, and in return, Rotary garners a wealth of goodwill and support. Moreover, they believe in the importance of incorporating fun into their endeavors. As Dr. Seuss aptly put it, "Fun is good." Therefore, they infuse a sense of liveliness into their club's volunteering activities, reinterpreting the "Service above Self" mantra to include enjoyment. After all, if joy is not found in their Rotary service, their commitment may wane. Contributing to their community and relishing the enjoyment that Rotary brings allows them to break out of their comfort zone. Through Rotary, they have the opportunity to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering a sense of equality among them as Rotarians. In today's fast-paced world, it is easy to overlook the significance of building community and embracing joy. If each person made a conscious effort daily to positively impact someone's life, particularly those they do not know, the world would undoubtedly be a better place.
