WPS agenda and regional defence. a peace research.
Research Director, Dept. of Global Politics, Norms and Societies at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO)
With the new strategic reality in Europe and the inclusion of all Nordic countries in NATO, this brief makes a case for how leaders of Nordic defense cooperation can even more explicitly and vigilantly consider common interests on gender equality and Women, Peace and Security. These dimensions can further legitimacy and diverse voices in national and regional defense debates, enhance public awareness and engagement, enable effective mobilization, and grant insights into how to address population security implications from war. Relating Nordic efforts to NATOs policies, this brief discusses i) joint needs for integration in national and regional defense planning, ii) common challenges on the inclusion of women military personnel, and iii) how exchanges of lessons learned on integrity can strengthen efforts to improve work environments and the upholding of Codes of Conduct. A warm thank you to all who contributed to the brief - clearly an important and engaging topic. I look forward to continuing the discussion! Military should move beyond integration to inclusion
We are proud to announce that WIIS Senior Fellow Dr. Joan Johnson-Freese recently co-authored an article with Andrea N. Goldstein in Defense One, entitled “Military Must Move Beyond Integration to Inclusion." The article discusses the crucial difference between integration and inclusion. Dr. Johnson-Freese writes, “...integration expects women to adapt to an existing system, while inclusion ensures that the system adapts to women.” Read the article here: https://ow.ly/YUNa50TvpJF #inclusion #article #womenindefense

Women in Leadership. Dear Sane Seven this project stands as a testament to the power of visibility, conversation, and commitment to change. ? By highlighting the achievements and challenges of women, you've not only celebrated their accomplishments but also amplified their voices. ? This approach not only serves to inspire but also paves the way for practical, actionable change. ? The emphasis on a diversified representation of women in leadership positions underscores the importance of inclusivity in building strong, resilient organizations. ? A project that extends beyond mere recognition, incorporating a structured dialogue through the exhibition and panel discussion. This element likely played a crucial role in fostering a deeper understanding and empathy among all levels of the MoD. ? Your work and initiative are shining examples of how organizations can move from performative acts to substantive actions in support of diversity and inclusion. ? The focus on stakeholder engagement and making pledges is a powerful mechanism for ensuring accountability and tracking progress towards equality and empowerment. Your pioneering work serves as a beacon for what’s possible when we commit to real change. #Diversity #WomenInLeadership #Equality #Empowerment Leadership Club
Many companies approach us to collaborate on women-led campaigns that could encourage a shift in internal culture ?? ?? Some campaigns create stronger ripple effects than others, but one recent initiative felt like it really hit the mark. It was a collaboration with the UK Ministry of Defence, led by incredible Caroline Bellamy and her brilliant team. This initiative had the perfect mix of role models, genuine stakeholder engagement, and specific pledges - making sure it didn’t just talk the talk, but actually walked the walk. We showcased 20 diverse and inspirational women, from the highest-ranking woman in the military, General Dame Sharon Nesmith, to some of the rising stars in both civil and military service. The highlight? A private exhibition and panel discussion, where people at all levels of the organisation could come together, feel seen, and be heard. This campaign was praised for igniting important conversations at the very top. It wasn’t just about showcasing women - it was about opening real dialogues, helping MoD leadership understand the everyday challenges women face. When people feel seen and heard, businesses evolve. Diversity and inclusion stop being buzzwords - they become genuine priorities. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but it doesn’t happen at all without that night. Full case study here: https://lnkd.in/ercH7Tr9 Here’s a video that gives you a glimpse into the impact that evening had on so many. The war in #Ukraine has clearly shown that women have the same motivation as men to join the fights - They want to keep Ukraine free. However, societies still resist the idea of women being conscripted into the military due to traditional gender roles and cultural beliefs that women need to be protected and that they are the caregivers. Conscripting women promotes gender equality by affording them the same responsibilities and opportunities as men. It ensures that all citizens, regardless of their gender, contribute to the defence of the nation, fostering a sense of national unity and shared responsibility. Moreover, by including women, the military can tap into a broader pool of talent and perspectives, increasing the overall #effectiveness of the armed forces and improving its #readiness and #capability to respond to threats. Of course, there is the other side of the coin. If we want women to have the same responsibilities and opportunities as men to defend their country, we also need to ensure men have the same responsibilities as women when it comes to care activities (caring for and educating their children or grandchildren, elderly or people with disabilities, every day) and household chores. We cannot expand women`s responsibilities in defending their country and expect men`s responsibilities in the private domain will maintain the same, otherwise what we are doing is putting, again, an extra burden on women. #GenderEquality #WomenAreNATO #WeAreNATO #NATO #EqualityForAll
